Question on takin pics of coins??

Ok to start with I use an Olympus 360L digital camera. How can I get better shots of these coins.
What color background work the best for taking pictures of coins? and what about lighting, is natural better? Here a couple of pics of the mercs I took. Let me know if these can be seen also...

I liked the first background better.
Try outdoor late afternoon/evening light. It will show the detail in the coin better.
 
Yeah I like the first pic also. I guess for the camera I use the picture arent that bad. I use an olympus 360 L, its really just a point and shoot camera. No real adjustments to it. it does have a macro setting to get within 4", probably the pics here were more like 2 or3"........
Im gonna do some experimenting with lighting one of these days...Thanks,
