Question on reading period military maps.

A

I look at a lot of period military maps during my research. I am pretty familiar with the map symbols used, i.e small blocks for houses, however I have noticed a "star" symbol on some of the maps in certian locations that I am unsure of the meaning. Does anyone know what the "star" indicates?

I have many differant Military maps from several Countries and differant time periods. I have seen a star used to denote a city or town of over a certian population, a fort, a depot or an area of interest.
I hope this helps.

On most of the maps I have (And I am sure you have the same ones <img src="/metal/html/lol.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":lol">), the star denotes a Mill.
Hope this helps,
