Question on programing XS??

In the book Mastering the Minelab Explorer XS and S It states that you can use the learn mode and wave coins over coil and more or less fine what you want! Is this true, can I costumize the Explorer to find only what I want? Or will it miss alot of coins by doing this? I understand I would be giving up rings and such, but at a few sights I hunt I would like to search for some coins only!! And go back later and hunt with no discrimination.. I guess I want to see just what this baby will do and not do!! <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)">

By Makeing customize pattern for just coins you will lose some nice finds. These will be coins on edge, multible coins, coins close to trash as thes will not read where your pattern is. Now if you just want to cherry pick a site for the surface coins or ones not that deep then you could build a pattern. If you decide to build a pattern set the sensitivity down to manual 1 or 2 and go straight in a out to the center of the coil with the targets as you will get a better pattern. Higher sensitivty and going accross the coil will give you a few stray signals.
The one pattern I use when I am not worried about gold rings is to black out the whole screen, the with the large cursior open the top up untill there is only about 1/4 inch black on the top left. I will also go down a little on the top right and open it up just alittle more for the halfs. Then I go to the learn and with the small cursior learn the nickles. Now i will switch back and forth between this pattern and my Iron mask at a -12 for questionable signals.

Most successful detectorists do NOT use the learn mode!
Many times a coin/s will be very close to another coin ( Nickel & Quarter) or quarter and brass part for example. In either case, any detector will give you a "target average" which will not fall in the window of the learn mode.
Learn to hunt in the iron mask mode only! It is absolutely the most simple and effective way to detect with the Explorer. Dig ALL repeatable signals!
If you want to cherry pick due to time constraint then just dig the highest tones and the target all the way to the upper right of the box.
Hope this helps and do not hesitate to email me with any questions you may have.

Jim,
I agree with you that "Learn" modes are not as precise as the mfg's. would like us to believe in promotional literature.
Also, one well known "independent" book, that gives much info on the Explorer, makes it sound like you can start from a black screen and "Learn" just the coins you want to find and then go find them without digging any trash!
To me reality doesn't work like that - such an approach will result in some missed coins, even "Learned" ones as well as some iffy trash signals that beg digging.
What do you think?
