Question on pinpointing with the G2

2 Much Trash

Well-known member
Just got my new G2 last week. Have not taken it out in the real world yet, just been too hot and just had a new grand daughter, so there's not been alot of spare time. But I did have time to set up a little test garden just to get a feel of the machine. I dug a trench averaging 6 to about 9" deep I buried some some bullets. a brass button, a penny, nickel and a mercury dime. Covered those up with a couple of inches of dirt , sprinkled in a bunch of assorted nails I had in my shed, then covered them with dirt the rest of the way. Ground balanced, which was so easy, put it back in disc mode and set the disc at 40. This machine grunted on every nail and gave me the high tones on all the good stuff no matter how fast or slow my swing speed, Amazing. The nails read in the 20's, brass in the 60's, the dime in the 70's. I love this unit. My only question is how to pinpoint. I've never had to worry about pinpointing with my other units. I'd just look at the coil and dig the spot that gave me the loudest tone. But this machine is so sensitive it gives the same high tone and numbers on the outside edge of the coil as it does in the center, even when I use the pinpoint button. I know that experience in the field with this awesome machine is going to be the best teacher, just like with any detector, but i'd like to dig as few 7' x 11' holes as possible So since I've got you guys I'm thinking asking for a little advice wouldn't hurt.

there's a little round dot in the middle of the 2nd fins from the front i recon its just a bit in front of that like just in front of it that works for me anyway if its a good target it should be there if its junk might be a bit away from there, just wiggle the coil around a bit will hear it hit the sweet spot :)

probably as many different ways to do it as detectorists but its one of the easy ones to pinpoint with you will have it in no time.

I'm just wondering about my machine - I bought it as used and it's one of the worst machines I've had for pinpointing - maybe that's why the previous owner got rid of it so quickly - item can be anywhere under the coil regardless of the volume of the signal - the only real way I've cracked it is to pull the coil back till the signal goes, even then all I know is signal is in front of coil - Somewhere! - may be a bad coil but am not changing it due to the depth I'm getting.

The little plastic ring on the coil is about perfect to use for pin pointing. Always pin point then turn 90 degrees and do it again.

If you guys are having that much trouble pinpointing there is a problem. Mine pin points almost exact, (right under circle on top of coil) the only problem I have is depth it will read 2 inches and be 4. It is always deeper than my meter says. Are you holding the unit off to the side of the target before pushing the PP and then scanning back on the target? I usually lift mine up 5 or 6 inches and to the side and then come back and check the target. Also if a coin is on edge you will get two beeps and the pinpoint will be on either side of the actual target. This sounds like two targets but it is one and the item will be between the two beeps.

I have questions about the virtue of the pinpointing on my Omega with the 11 dd which helped me move to the Gold Bug and with the exact same coil had MUCH better results! I bought a yellow epoxy marking pen at HF and lined 2 inches on either side of the sweet spot on the 11 and that helped even more. I just can't see that tiny circle at arms length with my old eyes. This also drove me to use the 5 inch dd almost exclusively. It must be the easiest pinpoint going! Center the signal and its dead center under the coil, usually within an inch of expected location. Depth is usually right on. If the target is much deeper than indicated it is almost always can slaw or trash. I sometimes forget the distance from coil to ground is included in depth and sometimes other variables/factors keep readings from being perfect. This is more an art than anything else because of an infinite amount of conditions that change constantly. Learning the range of what is a diggable signal is the reward of experience. That and learning where to look. HH!

Never bother with what the machine claims the depth is as they're usually all wrong - I can get my G2 sat on the supposed target every time by narrowing the signal - never under the centre though - or that little circle - but like I've said the depth I'm getting far outweighs the nuisance of being a little wide of the mark - actually make that VERY wide of the mark :ukflag:

If I have a strong target close to the surface I sometimes lift the coil a few inches to pinpoint. That should help reduce the amount of tones you get on the coil edge. My pinpointing is 2 step in that I use a detector to narrow it as much as I can then I use a Garrett ProPointer. I hold the Propointer vertically over the target for the final locate and the shallow ones are a piece of cake. I have found with most detectors for a majority of the time I can pinpoint just by moving the coil sideways and then forward and back and rarely have to actually stand 90 degrees to cross sweep it.

Yep, I got it. Put ya'lls advice together. Lifted the coil up to the side came back down and across found the sweet spot that matched the pinpoint tone and its worked every time. I'm good to go.
Thanks Guys,
Willie

First off I am sure my unit is working Just fine....I do find it a little tricky to pinpoint during some situations. Usually multiple targets and larger targets.
If your over a single coin it is easy and will settle at the dot on the coil.
But that s why I have bought the 5 inch coil. I'm still finding targets on the same athletic field and have pulled $132 in change.
along with a half bucket of assorted trash and about 20-30 keys at least.
