Question on MXT

Hello all, I'm a first time poster here with a question I hope some you maybe able to answer. I'm a DFX user, the Detector I used before that was the Eagle Spectrum. My son-in-law have been using the Spectrum for the past several years and has become very good at using it. I have been thinking about getting him an MXT for Christmas ( nice guy Huh ? ) since White's has that great deal going with the extra coil, pinpointer and headphones for $100. Have any of you folks went from the Eagle Spectrum to the MXT ? If so would you tell me how they compare as far as depth and sensitivity ? Would you go with the 300 over the 950 ? We are mostly Relic Hunters hitting Cellar Holes, Farms as well as old homes. The history around here goes back at least 250 years. We have both done very well with our current machines. The 6 X 10 has been my primary coil with the DFX. Thanks much, Bedfordbob

I can't help with the Eagle Spectrum question but maybe with the coil question. You said your primary coil was the 6x10. This coil is not known for it's depth. If you like it is it because of it ability to separate targets or is it because you need a DD coil for the mineral content of your soil?

If your ground requires a DD or you hunt in trashy areas I don't think you would want the 300 (12" concentric) coil. On the other hand if your ground is less mineralized and you are hunting relics in more open areas it would be an OK coil. I don't think the 12" is that great except on low mineral beaches. For most of my hunting the 12" is a little big. Again my soil is a 5 on a 0 - 12 scale with 0 bad and 12 great. For a 12" coil in my soil I would get the 10x12 SEF.

I use a 10" Excelerator coil but for my $100 I would be buying the 10D2 coil. It's deeper than the 9.5 and 6x10 coils. I think I get about the same separation as the 6x10 and certainly get the same coverage.

Jeff Foster and Monte have posts on another forum about the 10D2, and how it compares to the 6x10, 9.5. 12" and 10x12 SEF. They won't let me post links on this forum.

Rob, So you are saying that the 10D2 works well in high mineralized soils and goes deeper and covers as much ground as the 6 X 10 DD? If so I like that, I might have to pick one up.

Since Rob did a great job of covering the coil side of the question, I'll attempt to shed some light on the hardware.

I used to have the Eagle and have since moved on to the DFX. Nancy uses the MXT and we have hunted side by side for many years. About the only things the Eagle and MXT have in common ARE the depth and sensitivity. The MXT is one of the best of the turn on and go hunting machines made, plus you will have the coil compatibility with the MXT and DFX. In addition to the great selection of coils for the E-Series detectors, look for White's to expand yet on their coil selection and the move to the MXT would be a smart one. I agree with Rob that the 10D2 would be the coil of choice. You might want to get two so your son-in-law and you would not draw blood over who gets to use it.

If it weren't for the $100 deal I would get the 10" excelerator. Send me a PM if you can't find the coil posts. Rob

Guys I can't send links on this forum, sorry. Rob
