Question on hunting silver

kregh

New member
I have access to about 4 or 5 old home sites (80+ years old)..might have more coming up..

2 of them have returned zero silver... so my question is - on average how many old home sites do you have to hit to produce.

I know it all depends on if its been hunted before..etc..etc.. but I just want to get a general idea of how many sites on average you got a hit ..

Thanks in advance.. the contributors here are great!

You are correct in saying the site may have been hunted before.
Another consideration ~ was the people there prone to loose coins. My dad carried a clasp type coin purse and he probably lost very few coins.
Hunt along paths you can see or where you suspect paths were. (Outhouses, large tree they may have had picnics under.
Hunt along the path into the main entrance into an old house.
Gardens are an EXCELLENT areas for rings, coins, etc. Actually, my most productive area. My best garden find was a Masonic Gold Ring.
Around root cellars. Around and inside old foundations. Perimeters of fields.

Old silver is where you find it. Sometimes around old sites, sometimes not. Sometimes smack in the center of an old field (Where I found my one and only Confederate Belt Buckle). I almost passed it up as junk.

Finding silver sometimes feels like a drought, other times the site is almost raining silver. That's what makes the hobby fun.

People did not have as much coinage in those days and if
they lost it would have been a loss of greater value
They would have taken greater care of those few coins
by trying not to loose those.
Findind silver nowadays lost long time ago is a bonus.
