Question on HF coil

RonNH

New member
I have been lurking and on occasion posting on a Relic Forum. This forum is not brand- specific, that is, nearly all the brands are represented. I have been reading quite a few posts from people using the new Fisher F-75 and they seem to be pulling up some good stuff at respectical depths. A few months ago, I thought I had a good deal on one but it fell through. I'm almost glad I didn't spend the money as work is slowing down...but anyway I got thinking that maybe the success of this new Fisher lies in the operating frequency which is 18 (something) kHz. Hmmmmm, Minelab makes a large 18.75kHz coil for the X-Terra. I just wonder if my machine with the 5x10 HF coil would be just as good as the Fisher? I know you gold prospecting guys use this coil but do any of our coin-getters use it and what do they think of it? There might have been an old post about coin shooting with it but I don't remember.

It seems to me that spending $150 on a coil for a machine that I already have makes more sense than spending $8 - 900 for a different machine that only runs on one frequency. I'm sure that there are other things different about the Fisher, like the ground balance or ground cancelling that might give it the edge. I already have the 6" HF coil and I'm impressed with it and the larger HF coil would be for field hunting. So, I'd like to hear if anyone has much experience with this coil for something other than gold prospecting. Thanks, Ron

The F75, according to the manual, operates at 13 KHz. I doubt that you'd see any improvement by switching to the Fisher. The 5x10" DD works really well on the X70, except that it has a bit more trouble ID'ing iron and (predominantly) ferrous Canadian coins. I have ground here that gives me a nice solid overload signal with the stock coil.. which I can hunt with ease using the 5x10" HF DD. It has good coverage and, 'cause the gain can be ramped up, goes deep. A lot also depends on where you're located. Our ground is truly nasty and a DD shines here; yours might be mild and benefit more from a concentric HF coil. ..Willy.

Ron I have all the DD coils for my Xterra 70 and the 10.5" hi freq one is the one I use the most. It hits jewelry really well at good depths and coins also. Its off a little on the numbers by one or two numbers but not bad. It and the med freq 10.5" are the deepest coils Ive found using them here in NJ. They are truly heavier coils so beware of that. To keep it as light as possible I removed the skid plate. Both of the larger 10.5 round coils are deeper than the 5X10 eliptical.

.. how would you rate the 10.5" HF DD round coil vs the elliptical on really small targets? You think it would pick up 1/40 gram? I'm wondering 'cause I have an elliptical coming, but it's water resistance is suspect (so I hear) and I do a lot of prospecting in streams. Might have to trade. ..Willy.

Willy I only jewelry and coin hunt so that small of gold I dont know. Both the 5X10 eliptical and the 10.5" round hit all the smallest gold Ive found including chains and earrings and hit them hard. I know beach hunting I get a couple extra inches when Im using the larger round DD so I put the eliptical aside for now. Also it seems to hold its shape in the ground better, the pattern it puts down I mean. Seems the eliptical tapers in quicker from end to end while the larger round one will hold its shape deeper and thats important, especially on loose sand beaches.

By siliconing the coil cover to the coil and you are good to go.I am paranoid and also siliconed the cable/coil interface, which is probably an overkill. May not be waterproof at 10 feet, but for streams you should be fine. Learned this trick from Tinfoil. I have wondered about the round DD also, and may switch to it this next beach season although the 5X10 is works great and is super light. Also for you, it would seem the elliptical would nose into the rocks better than the round coil. I know of one guy who is thinking of waterproofing the whole machine and using it in the ocean because it finds gold so well. Wondering about the falsing and lower sensitivity tradeoff though.
