Question on headphones

I purchased a cheap pair of $15 radio shack optimus headphones. So far they have lasted for months, and they seem to be OK. Is there something that i am missing by not having headphones made esp. for metal detecting, i.e. Gray ghost?
thanks

as you have that I just got for my Dad to use and for a backup pair. I also have a used pair of Gray Ghost originals that have had the limiter removed. By far the Ghosts have a much clearer sound. It is like night and day! IMO, they are quieter when there is no target. I can't really explain what I mean, but when you get a real faint, deep target that just barely breaks the threshold, it seems to me that the Ghosts will pick that signal up much better. The Radio shacks sound muddy and much lower pitch to me. Another thing, with the Ghosts, I bet they sound like crap for music! That is not their intent and is why that maybe they sound so much better for detecting. Not sure, haven't tried, but there is less bass with the Ghosts.
Also, the ghosts block out a 100 times more background noise than the Shacks do. I could carry on a conversation with you with the Shacks on, with the Ghosts I have to take them off to hear anything. Everytime anyone says something to me when they are on, I scream "WHAT?" <IMG SRC="/forums/images/biggrin.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":D">

Most of the dealers that advertise here have them. Try David at dixie or The guvner. There both great guys. And if you want wide open sound without the limiter don't modify the Gray Ghosts and void your warrenty go with the Jolly Rogers model. Same great mfg. and about $20 bucks cheaper or you can go with the nugget busters which are the Gray Ghosts without the limiter and cost the same as the GG.

They still have the limiter circutry in them and it effects the overall volume. For most people there fine. But for those of us who have hearing loss sometimes you need a little more volume to hear those faint deep hits. The nugget busters where made for gold prospecting where volume is very important for those faint little nugget hits. If you want the NTD style they now offer the Nugget Buster NDT which will give you the wide open volume and the replacable cords.

The NDT dont have the switch to turn off the limiter, but the Ultimates do but dont have the replaceable cords. The loudest for us that are hard of hearing are the Timberwolfs that also has the switch to turn on or off the limiter, while the Gray Ghost NDT will do just great and maybe too loud for those with nomal hearing.
