Question on Head-Phones

My used Explorer came with a pair of Optimus 135 headphones and I don't know if they are good one or not??
I do have my own pair of Sony MDR 7506 model and they cost me $160.00 four years ago, so I am wondering if I could use those instead of the Radio Shack phones that came with the unit. I am a newbie and would like to get anyone's advice on this. Thanks to all.

Both of these are home stereo headphones, not detector headphones, but will work for you detector. The detector headphone are built to withstand the punishment we give them. The better detector headphone like the Gray Ghost or Timberwolfs have a better cable to withstand the bending we give them, fit tighter to block out the back ground noise and comforable ear cups as we wear these headphone for hours.
I think i am sounding like a comercial, but just want to let you know either pair should work and try each one and use the ones you like and when they go bad get a set of the detector headphones. We dont need all the freq response some home stero headphone have, but need comfort and dependability for our detectors.

Hi Joe, although most any "stereo" headphone will work, using a brand or model made for metal detectors will generally give the user optimum sound. It will take a few trips afield to get used to any new headphone. Personally, I like the Gray Ghost series from Detector Pro. They have a lifetime warranty, are made for metal detectors (won't sound good for music), and are good quality headphones, and rugged enough to take the extreme punishment of metal detecting. If you ever have a problem, send them to Detector Pro for warranty repair. High end stereo headphones will not hold up normally. You'll have shorts in the cable or speakers before you know it. Good hunting, David @ Dixie

My recent experience has been that some of the headphones made for detecting that are available do not work well with the Explorer because of their limited frequency response. In other words the Explorer is capable of producing very high pitch sounds ie. silver targets and fairly low pitch sounds ie. foil and everything in betwwen. My problem was I bought a very well made set of phones but it was hard to tell pennys, quarters, dimes and silver apart without spending alot of time trying to decide what was under the coil.I solved the problem by taking the drivers out of a decent set of headphones made for music and replaced the ones in the detecting phones I baught. Now I have a rugged set that sounds the way it should.I know I voided the waranty but there realy isnt much in the headphones that can,t be user repaced if you know how to solder. If your headphones feal good on your head stay with what you have if not make sure you buy a pair that has a good frequency response(highs, lows).Hope this helps.
