Question on Ground Balancing

trueblue

New member
after reading several post concerning GB'ing and finding that a few recommend that the first step be # GB knob be reset by so many turns CCW followed by about half as many CW , then to set the threshold and adjust the balance .
I have had no problem GB'ing without reseting or recentering the GB knob first so Is it really nesseccary to reset to GB knob first or just the preferred way of some ?

I would like to know aswell. I was able to GB my Tiger Shark in the dry sand but couldnt get it balanced in the water. Wondering if im doing something wrong.

My Sting2 sounds off positive in salt when lowering the coil.(AM) No matter what GB setting I use. I use the TR mode and adjust the disc up to 3-4 to keep it stable. Hence, I got a PI for the salt sand/saltwater. And I still came out $500.00 cheaper than getting an excal 2..........go figure??? If I'm not mistaken your Tiger has a salt mode?

[size=medium]when changing sites. Once you set a working GB on most detector models, you're going to be close enough for most of the local sites you'll hunt that you might need to make a slight adjustment (tweak) to the GB , but there are also times you won't need to do anything at all.

The helpful suggestion on setting the GB knob so many turns from an 'end' setting is really to try and help those who just do not understand GB.

It will also depend on the make and model detector you use because some tend to be rather 'touchy' while other can be set and seldom change. My 'main-use' detector gets rebalanced only when I change search coils (to get a good functional GB with that coil), or then I go to a site with extreme or pronounced changes in mineralization to where I hunt most often, or, when I have changed it intentionally during a seminar or other time when giving instruction on GB.

I'm sure you're doing just fine and can ignore the suggestions posted to help those learn the GB control.

[size=medium]I hope you're not confusing using a conventional TR Discriminator for a PI just because you've rejected the low-conductive salts.

When using a motion Discriminate model you make sure the GB is set for the worst IRON mineralization at the beach, then you adjust the Discriminate control to reject the low-conductive salts. It still requires motion, and some models on the market don't have a decent GB control. By using a 'conventional' TR-Disc. model with an expanded Discriminate range, you're simply using the lower settings to reject (discriminate or balance out) the ground signal and/or the wetted mineral salt response.

Wanted an old Tesoro PIranna but no luck finding one. The PIranna was not a depth demon but it was rock stable. I'm still learning the HH PI. The audio is rich. So far so good, just have some trouble pinpointing.( I also run the freq too high- chattery)
Your 100% on the TR mode using disc to tune out the salt. I've been wondering if the Tiger's "salt mode" is a silent search TR mode??( or a CZ type ckt?) While playing using the TR mode in freshwater I found a baby ring smaller than a dime @ 5-6 inches that in disc mode would only "peep" on. So i think the TR Disc mode on the SR2 is useful and prob under used by most hunters. I don't think Tesoro would just put it(TR DISC) on there for no reason, that's not their style. It makes learning the machine interesting, like having 2 detectors in one.
