Question on ground balance

RonNH

New member
How important is setting the Sens. to single digits before ground balancing? I usually manual balance the machine but a few days ago, I forgot to re-set the Sens and wondered why the machine was so quiet. I figured it out, but I had covered a good bit of ground by then. Does it make a big difference if you don't lower it? Thanks, Ron

Ive done the same thing before. This is my opinion and I'm sure you will get a lot of difference responses,I think you should ground balance with the sens close to what you hunt in,because if you ground balance in low sens you dont pick up the minerals for deep coins, unless you hunt in track that might make a difference.

It won't hurt to GB with a low Sen. Sometimes you have to lower it to get a stable screen to GB to. You would have to run the Sen. extremly low to make a big difference in depth. Mostly what you're not hearing is the smallest of metals in the ground. Most coins at a reasonable depth will sound off.

Bob,Even if you goundbalance in single digets and forget to set sens back to stable you will pick up coins at normal depth.I thought that sens is how you get your depth.

Setting the GB is a function seperate from the operating modes the sensitivity level may have no bearing on the results. Do you get the same GB number on the screen if you re-ground balance at your normal sensitivity level?

Don't forget tracking! Unless conditions absolutely called for a fixed GB, tracking should always be in use on the 70 for best results.

You are right,I checked the ground balance at 5 and 7 and 20 and 25 all came out the same.I read somewhere that you need to groundbalance with low numbers.I got the same results in my test.

hmmmmmm.

I have tried groundbalancing at sens high as possible and also sens in the one figure range.

Yes there is a difference, but when I am back to normal sens levels with track on it keep changing back to what would have been the GB if I did it at high sens.

I prefer manual and track off for the absolute best performance, or should i say the absolute best confidence.

I dont know, more input needed.....

This is more likely with lower GB nrs. My ground reads from 10 to 45 on the Terra.

Lower it gets the more difference I see.

I allways do my GB ritual,,, lol,,, in the prospecting mode.

Sensitivity, Threshold and Ground Balance are inter-related. If you have the Sensitivity set too high, you will not likely obtain the optimum GB setting. In addition, your Threshold will become instable, creating false signals as you scan over varying mineralization. If you hear this unstable sound, you need to evaluate your current settings. As mentioned in my X-30 and X-50 article, I recommend setting the sensitivity at a single digit level, until after I have set the GB. After I have achieved the proper Ground Balance, I turn the Sensitivity up as high as I can, without causing false signals when I sweep.

BUT, on the other hand..... I usually set my Sensitivity, Threshold and GB as stated, when I first start hunting a site. But considering the fact that "tracking mode" updates the X-70 GB on the fly, and the fact that my Sensitivity and Threshold do not change on their own, I suppose the Sensitivity level you use to initially set the GB on the X-70 isn't as much of an issue as it is with the X-50.
