Question on Garrett 250.

Hello All, I'm thinking about purchasing the Garrett 250. I've been looking at the Minelab X-Terras, but the Garrett's a bit cheaper, and it's for my son, who's shown a bit of interest in metal detecting. Can anyone who does or has owned one fill me in: how deep does it go in the sand? Does it tolerate salt conditions? What's it like at parks or playgrounds? Is it easy to pinpoint with? What type of detecting is it more suited to? I appreciate any help!

Its great on the dry sand but very unstable in the wet sand... It would still be a pretty good and easy detector for him to use... Too bad you can't find a Whites IDX PRO it was very good to me in the dry and wet sand.

Thank you for your replies Craig and Sandpiper! I never thought about another detector, and would definitely consider other brands. Guess I need to do my homework more! The reason I was looking at the Garrett was because it's cheaper. Sandpiper, hope you get a clear sailing soon with your health! My husband and I come from the state of Victoria. We live in an old gold mining town, in Gippsland, and he manages the tourist gold mine there. If you plan to head down our way, we'd love to meet another fellow detectorist! Just send me a PM if you like, and we'll take it from there.

Angela, the ACE 250 is an incredible detector. You won't find any machine with depth readout, 3 tones, sensitivity control, discrimination: Accept / Reject Notch, probability target display, runs on 4 AA batteries (recharge-ables)at this price. It has the latest technology built into it, and gets great depth in dry sand, and you may have to turn down the sensitivity down somewhat in wet salt sand/water. The machine is also sensitive to gold, and some guys have had success using it as a nugget hunter. The machine had other coils available at a great price too. Some of the coils on other machines cost more then the total cost of the ACE.

This would be a great detector for your son as it is very light, and there is always the possibility of upgrading to another machine later on. Here is a link to the Garrett Forum (if you have not already seen it). Snoop around and see some of the results that this machine has produced. I have one (and 6 other machines) and it is my favorite machine to hunt sports fields, parks and sandy beaches.
