question on detector training?

deerman

New member
I'm wondering if anybody would pay to learn how to use there detector other then the quick once over you get by some detector salesmen
on the job training if you will?and what would you be willing to spend to learn just how to set up your detector for the places you hunt
like a lake verses an ocean,or a river verses dry sand, large coil or small ect..but to have someone bring you out when you first start using your detector and actually
show you how to get the most out of your machine?

If Andy Sabisch was in town, I'd pay a fee to go watch/hunt with him. I'd also like to see some seminars offered by the pros. You can go to a sportsman's show and take all kinds of classes on fishing, hunting, boating, archery etc. Seems like there should be something similar for this hobby. Jim

nobodys charging me for there services on how to run a detector (been doing it for over 40 years) just saw an ad on a web site charging people to learn to use an under water detector with 4 or 5 dives to show how
and wondered if it was worth it? as it took me a while to learn my first detector but i was only 9 at the time with no one to show me how to set up my machine i was finding coins in a few hours but that could have been
in a few min. lol

Some people are such great teachers they deserve something for their efforts. Like Monte for instance!

Best Regards,
Steve

Just speaking for myself I would not, I would listen to any and all advice and use plain old common sense which by the way is not so common any more.

I probably wouldn't under other circumstances as I know plenty of people who also use the same machines I do and we all help each other out, but U/W detecting has a whole other side to it. If they're teaching you tips on how to dive & detect safely, which would be more of an advanced SCUBA course than a detecting course, then I'd say it couldn't hurt. Now if they're only teaching you how to use your UW detector, I wouldn't go for it. Water machines are pretty simple to understand, I would argue more simple than most land detectors...it's just a matter of getting used to them via experience, just like any other machine. But add SCUBA to the mix, and you have to worry about a new bouyancy factor, buddy diving complications, lack of hearing (wearing headphones), getting tangled, more disciplined breathing because you're exerting yourself more.... etc. It might be worth it for an inexperienced diver/detectorist to pay for help, especially if that person is a certified instructor and if you got an advanced course to put in your logbook.
