Question on coin tone

Arturo de Zorro

New member
Since about 1996 I have used a Explorer XS then upgraded to the Explorer II and finally the E-Trac. I was able on all three too adjust the tone on silver coins to a high pitch that sounded like a old type bicycle handle bar bell. Can the same adjustment be done on the 3030 ? And when you say waterproof unit, can it take a side-swipe from a ocean wave ? thanks in advance.....

I don't know about the bicycle bell sound - I had an explorer XS, too, but the only detector I ever recall sounding like a bicycle bell was a Garrett. The CTX is waterproof to 10 feet and getting hit by a wave isn't a problem.

I would Go to Audio then Tone and then set Th Tone at-10, Variability-9, Limits-10. I have bad hearing and this setting helped with the constant ringing in both ears. thanks for the info, I just sold an Excalibur II last year and now this 3030 could be its replacment..

You can get pretty close-- but not exact.

In combined mode you can make all silver coins sound the same with a high tone that is very close to the silver tone on the Explorers. But everything in that bin will have that same tone depending on how you set up the bin. So silver Dimes/Qtrs/ Halves/Dollars will all sound the same.

Or if you run 50 CO tones you will have variation but now your dimes will drop down and will not be as high as the Explorer tones. Tough to grasp all this unless you have a machine in front of you or ar familiar with the settigns. Anyway, plenty of versatility with the CTX.

And if Minelab ever does a software upgrade/tweak they could make it sound identical to the E's/E-Trac simply by giving us variability on the tones or giving us a little more high end tones. Like maybe to 1500 Khz. But with they ???

The CTX has other advantages and you will adjust to the tones. I have been using Explorers since 1999 and never thought I would switch. The SE and E-Trac never convinced me to drop the E2, but the CTX made me switch. I still don't like the tones as well or the dreaded 12 Ferrous line, l but the goodies in the pouch make up for it!!

Good luck

just my 2 zincs

Thanks for that reply and i belive I could live with dimes/qtrs/ halves/Dollars all sounding the same. Can you jump from conduct sounds to ferrous sounds by a push of a button, and is there a weighted coil for water hunting?

I really wish I could get that high tone silver sound from my Etrac and Explorer but it's not there....

Maxed out on pitch on the CTX3030 a silver quarter sounds like a wheat cent on the Etrac/Explorer. So a wheat cent on the CTX sounds like an Indian Head on the Etrac.

I wish Minelab would have left the 50 conductive tones alone on the CTX and kept it the way it was on the Explorers and Etracs.

There's prob a "reason" why they changed things. I hunt mostly in combined and at times trust the screen over the sound. Crazy I know but I find the vdi on occasion can be more accurate.l.

Ron,
I see you in the Calif forum and I have changed over to the CTX also, I thot I would never put my Etrac down but it has happened.

There are some situations, like when running ferrous coin (which I run) where that might be true I guess. I never dig targets based solely on the screen though as there are just too many of them on the screen with no audio when in ferrous coin.
It is interesting you say combined mode though. Have to pay attention there when I cross check signals - thx.

I am shocked at how the screen locks on targets at depth though. My two deepest non ferrous targets were pull tabs at 10" and 11" and they both locked on, on the screen. Coins are third at 9" ;-)

yes you can go from ferrous to conductive sounds by using the "previous mode" selection on the user button

Actually the ctx is easier to use then the ep2 or xs I set my nickel bin 10 to 151000hz and coin bin 31 to 50 at 1000Hz don't have to look at screen just listen for high tone and check screen to make sure. But yea you are right I can't tell what I'm digging but I get Lot's of surprises which isn't to bad.

If I dug pull tabs at 10" and 11", I would run from that site, to much fill dirt there, don't get me wrong, I'll dig 11" for a wheat penny...

eheheh. It is a sandier spot, not fill dirt (a bit mixed) - maybe I'm wrong but mostly easy digging, so no worries. But, I did dig a solid 8" gold ring there - my deepest and best gold ring. It was inscribed on the inside, wedding band - and it dated to 1910!

If they were married in 1910 I don't think you will be able to find the person to return his ring. Not any have made it to 102 + another possibly 20.

Yeah, of course I tried to find the owner! (It is worth around 200 bucks but to reunite it to the son/daughter would be priceless). I looked up the name in the local phone books but the problem (outside of the owner not being alive) is that it was a Czech name and I couldn't even find it at all. I wonder if it was lost during the war?
