Question on coal cinders and small rusted iron infested site.

I hit an 1850's farm house site(still standing) and the front yard was only 12 feet deep from the road and filled with coal cinders and wood ash dumpings along with small bits of rusted iron.
I switched to an eight inch coil and lowered the sens to @ 16 man. I had the screen pretty open in discrim. and even tried iron mask -16 to hear everthing. When I dug a hole the automax pinpointer would detect the cinders.lol. Nothing was found deep and only new clad and brass etc. Maybe I should have tried the 5 inch coil. Will anything help setting wise? HH Ev

Hi Ev, The AutoMax pinpointer will pick up all metals, including minerals such as Iron and mineral infested coal cinders. The Sun Ray X-5 is an excellent coil in heavy iron. Be sure to go slow, set your Sens to lower settings (remember, 5" coils aren't for depth, just good trash separation. Typical depth is 5-6 inches on coin sized targets). Pick at all signals. Sometimes it takes several swings over an audio response to get a "lock on" tone. I might suggest getting yourself a Sun Ray X-1 Target Probe. They are an excellent investment. It will use the same Disc as your Explorer and give you about 3" on coin sized targets. Iron will null or be discriminated out. Note: iron that has been galvanized (tin plated) can still respond at times, even though rusted. Listen carefully to the sound. It tends to sputter and spit in the background. Good hunting, David @ Dixie

I have the excelerator 5" but didn't put it on. The X-1 probe is on my list but the wife just got a speeding ticket .
I was going slow looking for targets to repeat and there was so much iron that I tried a few of deep iffy signals but gave up on a couple cause it was someones yard. As a last resort I put Fast on and the signal were choppy and not as good sounding. I've done alright at the park but this was my first old home with this detector and the worst cidner I've ever seen hh Ev
