Question of VDI Identification?

For the most part, those MXT users that dig alot of their targets, when ID'ing a target that's at the edge of the VDI range, do you ever find that something that was solidly identified as iron is actually a valuable, or non-iron target? If so, what percentage of the time has this happened? How much should I trust the Iron ID when I've made the ID in several different directions?

"How much should I trust the Iron ID when I've made the ID in several different directions?"

are u talking about when the id rolls like a slot machine? when i used mxt coins that were 6+ inch deep would make the id roll like slot machine any where from -10 iron up to +74 going up and down. Now If u had some iron the detector would give a false good single at the edge of the iron. all u need to do is go in pin pointing mod find the center of the traget go back over it again for best reading.

thats was one thing i did not like about mxt was false good single u get at the edge of iron but u can with time figure it out.

by the way if u doubt what the detector id says then dig it up eyes are the best id u can ever have no detector is perfect not even minelab Se.

Just seems to me that if the ID feature is useless on most machines then maybe we should all be using simple beep and dig machines. If you can't trust the ID the meter is giving you why even look at it? There are some features about this White's that I like over the Tesoro I have, but its starting to make me believe that the margin of features I like better is very thin indeed.

Keep in mind Canewrap: We are using machines to give us a calculated guess at what is in the ground. The VDI on any machine is not fool proof and some VERY nice finds will not "lock on" to a solid VDI. The $4,000 bracelet I found came in as a "pulltab", and a trashy one at that. (multiple segments) Other factors affecting VDI readings are the minerals and trash close to the target as well as multiple targets in the same hole and the list goes on and on.

Hi Canewrap, the beeper wouldn't tell us what is in the ground any better. If you where digging relics or gold jewelry we know that both can read as junk. The vdi works best if you are hunting coins, especially when you don't want to dig too many holes in someones yard. My MXT is really accurate on coin ID, but as we've talked my ground is pretty good. I get a lot of tabs at 22, could it be a ring, yes. If I only have so much time I might skip these. I just found a small ring that read 6 but most of my rings read higher than 10, so most of the time I would skip the low ones. It's just a help and it has it's place. It sure ID's more accurate than my IDX which had less segments and only bars.

If you are willing to dig everything at all locations you don't need ID. If I only hunted CW sites I would be digging every target. If I'm at the beach and use a scoop it's quicker to dig everything. It's not perfect but for some kinds of hunting and some types of sites it's super. Rob

Thanks Rob, I guess I'm starting to see the value of the ID system. I was only using a basic beep and dig machine before I got this and had learned how to do most of my discriminating using my ears, but I was still digging most of my signals anyway, because I was doing all CW sites during the past year. I'm now going to be doing more coinshooting, because I'm getting my son into it and coinshooting is the best way to keep his interest and keep him safe until I can teach him what he needs to know about relic hunting (avoiding snakes, poison ivy, ticks etc.). To answer what Larry responded as well, yes I know that the meter is an approximation, I hope I didn't step on any toes with my statement. Guess it just seemed to me that its tough to glean anything that will form a pattern from such a variable data source. I understand the coinshooting use and it explains why I haven't had any real use for a meter until now. My main reason for wanting the White's MXT was the fact that it runs an all-metal Threshold and discrimination together, something you can't get with a Tesoro. Also, seems that there are more choices in coils right now for the White's than what the top of the line Tesoros have. If the Tejon had some of the same coil choices as the MXT I would probably have a Tejon right now. But, I'm starting to like the MXT so its all moot anyway.

I know where you are coming from canewrap, I'm pretty newby with the MXT but I have found that I like the bar indicator with the VDI. Working with your son and coinshooting, if the VDI is good and the bar is 2-3 blocks, it is usually a good target up to 4-6 inches. This is using the stock 950 coil and the 4X6. I have an X50 that I haven't learned to communicate very well with yet and its VDI will bounce everywhere (kinda reminds me of my oldest daughter in high school) .
Good luck,
