Question? How the meter is adjust and how it works?

I just got a Digisearch 180 target ID meter for my Sov GT, and I dont have a clue on how to instaled an less on how to set it up or like you all seid adjust the meter and how to read it.
my Sov has a S1 probe on it.
please HELP!!
thank you,
Abel

The coil cable connect to the S-1 switching box, and if you have a S-1 probe made for the GT then this box mounts on the V clip that is on top of the shaft. Now the S-1 for the GT has a V clip on top of the switching box that your meter will slide on, if it is a older S-1 for the XS series Sovereign than it was made to mount under the shaft on a V clip which you will have to get a V Clip and mount it to use the probe. Like i say the coil cable goes to the S-1 switch box and the cable that is on the S-1 switching box goes to the meter and the cable from the meter goes to the control box.
Now to set it for 180 you can use a new quarter to set it after you turn on the Sovereign the meter should be working and set the GT to the disc mode as this is the only mode the meter will ID with. Pass the quarter in front of the coil back and forth and try to get the numbers to read 180 and not over it by slightly adjusting the calibration control on the back of the meter while swing the coin across the coil to 180. Then it is done and you are ready to hunt. I find while trying to set the meter I want to keep the tone a steady tone by doing small passes with the coin across the coil as this will keep the number steady.

Rick.

Thank you Rick, yesterday I tryed and didn't seem to work because the number are on the 400-500 range, so I will try again this afternoon.

The Digisearch was a 180 meter that came out when the GT did as its says it right on the meter, the older ones that were the 550 meter said Minelab on them or Sovereign, so you will have to use numbers 550 instead of 180 to calibrate the meter, or do a rescale of the 550 meter. To do a rescale you have to change 2 resistors and the potentiometer in the meter. I have some of the kits to do this if you decide to rescale the 550 meter.

Well the one I have it says minelab Sovereing on it when I purchase it the add said 180 meter, maybe I got A cat for a rabbit Ha?
Thank you again I will talk to the seller about it.

It is obvious the meter is not re-calibrated for 180 scale. The ones with Sovereign on the face are not 180. Still a great meter, just learn the wider scale or have a qualified person do the modification.

Hey RickND. how can I get off your hands one of those kits for my meter, do you recomended to do it or just get use to the 500 meter? is there any chart for the 500 meter that any of you are aware of it?
Thank you!

I spoke to Abel by phone yesterday and the meter he has is definitely a Digisearch 180 meter. The 400 and 500 numbers he is describing are the negative numbers when the coil is sounding off on ferrous metals.

Abel, here's a chart that Plugger posted a while back, hopefully It will help you get accustomed to the meter. Notice the bottom of the chart where it says -498, that's the 400-500 numbers you are seeing. You have to adjust the meter by turning the dial on the back while running a quarter or dime under the coil until it holds at 180. Once you do that all the numbers should follow the chart fairly closely.

If you still have questions give me call tomorrow. John

John, thank you for posting this chart, I just tuned the meter acording to the other poetingsfollowing the instructions you give me over the phone and it is working great. I just need a clear weather to try it out, in this part of the world rains 9 months out of the year and the other 3 months rains too, but this evening I was able to go across the street from my house to a school play groung and tested on few coins and now I can see the meter working the way it should be. It was just me! Like some one said on the forum (don't blame your machine, instruct your self to prevent be a failure)
thank you! all for all your comments and help!! looking forward to a happy hunting and to have lots of fun.

Abel,

I have the kits do the 180 mod on the 550 meter if you want to do it yourself, just send me a PM or E-Mail me at Lschroe929@aol.com if interested in one and we can work out something, or if you don't know how or don't want to do the soldering I can help you out also.

Rick
