LS hunter

Member
IM looking at a Garrett XL 500.. IS this detector ok for salt water hunting ,,Im just getting in too water hunting and didnt want and go out and spend 1.100 dollars.
If its some thing im going to stay in i think ill go with the whites beach hunter id or the excal 2.. well please tell me what you think about this detector good or bad.....thanks Greg

There are two Sea Hunter XL500's...........XL500 VLF_Model-11126 and XL500 Pulse_Model-11129.

I've used the XL500 Pulse for many years and have had lots of luck with my unit.

But it is a vintage year around 1983, so I suggest giving Garrett's service dept. a call to see if they still service these units. If they do not, steer clear !

There is no service available for these in Australia, I had to obtain and replace all the double lipped seals myself some way back.

I had the pulse induction version ,its pretty good with the large coil but compared to the machines of today forget it.Get something more up to date...Save your money and get a good machine for the beach,it will pay for itself.

There are alot of good, used and more up-to-date detectors out there that are available at good prices. You could satisfy your goal of having both a good land and water detector, just by using the classified forum here on Findmall.

Good luck, Crispy

If your getting started and want to see if you like detecting in the water, I'd say get it if it is in reasonable shape and price. I've used the PI version and works and looks like a tank. One thing to keep in mind is if it breaks or you eventually want to up grade to a better unit, Garrett will take in your xl500 as a trade in for their new sea hunter at half price.

Aloha
