question from a newbie

I have a SeahunterII. While searching in dry sand I am getting better at pinpointing. However, sometimes I dig and find nothing. I rescan, get a signal, dig again. Nothing. Then I rescan and do not receive a signal. I do scan the sand I've dug up. Any thoughts on this?
Also, how can I tell how deep the metal is? I noticed some of you are able to determine that before you dig.
Thanks
Dianne

I've had similar issues but it's only with small objects like a small wad of foil or a pull tab. what happens is a multitude of things. Usually the object falls through the scoop holes and lands in the vicinity of your target hole. The other scenario I've had is it was at the tip of the pile in my scoop and the wind blew it out. The third issue is tricky and requires explaining but also applies to the previous scenarios.

If you signal a target and extract it and if it's small enough, it might not read in a pile of loose- extracted sand. The reason for this has to do with how well your machine air-tests. Small objects in packed sand read better on most machines vs. just laying on top. When you scan your target hole and can't get a reading then it's position was probably disturbed, salt water filled the hole or its extracted. The trick to finding it would be switching to a non-discriminate mode, if you have one, and scan your area well. Flattening out the extracted pile by spreading it in one direction can also help in producing a signal.

we have not had many north easters this season huntings been slow!! and hard got to work alot to find the good cuts!! You live close to some great beaches! If we get a good spring north easter you should try to meet up with some of us. we can show you how to get some of those Salisbury silvers that are freed up in good storms!!So far what have you found?I'll be up your way this week hunting a few areas most likely with "Boston Bob" and "Metaldig" maybe we will run into you. If we do I'll try to help ya with the pin pointing. GOOD LUCK!!

Thanks to all of you for your help. I am from the northeastern most part of MA. Lots of beaches. Weather has been very cold and windy. The middle of next week is supposed to be a little warmer. Think I'll venture out and test out some of your suggestions. I find a lot of pieces of old storm fencing and lobster pots. Very sharp and very rusty. A lot of glass because I'm obsessed about picking up broken glass on the beach. Seashells are another HUGE obsession of mine. I have found some pennies (clad), and 1 Ben franklin 1/2dollar? It's black and not readable. Any cleaning suggestions? I have also lost 1 quarter. While testing a signal I buried a quarter and couldn't find it.:rage: So if you find it it's mine. Love these smileys.

I live in Billerica Ma.I hunt beaches from Rye N.H to Revere Ma. some times further south too.I mostly hunt the Salisbury area though.Link to my FINDS PHOTOS. HTTP://COMMUNITY.WEBTV.NET/BEACH-HUNTER/BEACHHUNTERSFINDS

at the end of the reservation, there is a public area you can hunt.Is this true? Isn't their a fee to enter?

Beach hunter,

I live in Westford and have only started hunting. I tried the beaches of Maine twice finding some clad coins. How long does it take you to get to the beaches you hunt in Mass ?

I was thinking about possibly trying a beach hunt next week during the low tide at the end of the week.

Any thoughts ?
