question from a newbie at beach hunting

I moved to the coast last october ,although I am not new to md'ing I am new to beach hunting.
The weather here is finally decent for detecting so I have been going out to the beach when I can. I have not been finding a lot, coins mostly ,even though in the summer the beach here is mobbed, and I mean mobbed. My question is, is it just that the beach is empty of goodies right now or should I consider a different detector? I use an MXT , which I love. It does get a bit noisy in wet sand but I found I can control that by lower gain or frequent ground balancing.
I have found vdi numbers are definately different in a beach enviroment, ids at times are a bit off, so I have benn digging every good signal I get.
Cash is tight right now so buying a differnt md is most likely out. I am hoping somone out there can give me some advice to tecniques they use on the beach.
thanks and HH all

Slapshot,I don't know the answer but in a pinch I would try this.Find a spot on the beach where you get no readings.Take coins or any thing else you find and run some tests on them.Write your vdi down and compapre them.It has to help you a little.as a matter of fact you should try it at any new place.I made myself a test group and taped thm on 1-inch venetian bld strips PLASTIC) and just take them with me all the time.that way i just wave them over the coil and see if I am getting the correct reading.Hope it helps you.

even the most popular beaches will not give up the goods.But....get a good N.easter and its unreal what will show up on the beach you can fill your bag with coins, silver ones too!!WELCOME TO BEACH HUNTING!!I would not replace the MXT just practice on the beach and you'll do fine!! I only use a CLASSIC III W/the blue max 950 coil.I do very well its all about knowing your detector! well good luck maybe I'll see ya on the beach some time.
