Question for you X-Terra 50 users about ground balancing

Blink

Member
I just received my new X-T 50 and when I ground balance, according to what I have read I'm suspose to have a high pitch tone on the + side and a low tone on the - side. I have a low tone on both sides. Am I doing something wrong or is there something wrong with the detector? I can hardly hear the tones on either side of + or -. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Blink

Go into all metals with the sensitivity not to high.

Dont let the coil touch the ground move it up and down just a few inches until you get the quietest in between point.

You can experiment with the + and - buttons by taking them to their extremes so that you can get the sounds in your memory and then adjust them.

Once you have the knack its so easy that it can be done in less than a minute.

I hope this helps.Jerry.

with the sensitivity set at 9, then increasing my sensitivity back to where I want it after ground balancing. John

Thanks guys, it's not that I'm having a problem ground balancing it's the tones that I'm haveing a problem with. I can hardly hear them. According to what I have read on this forum I should hear a high pitch tone when I raise the GB all the way up on the plus side and a low tone when I lower the GB on the minus side. The tones on both the + & - are about the same and are very hard to hear. If the wind is blowing very hard I can hardly hear the tone on the - side.

I'll touch on a few possibilities:

1. Do you have any hearing loss that you know of? Getting on in years and not been tested lately.
2. Are you using headphones?
3. If yes, do they have a volume control and is it turned all the way up?
4. The X50 has separate volume for speaker & headphones, you can only adjust headphone volume when the headphones are plugged in.
5. What kind of headphones? Make & model and impedance if you know it.

A. Plug in headphones, turn X50 volume up all the way, and headphone volume up all the way if applicable.

B. Set sensitivity to 15.

C. When in GB adjust mode, push the (+)repeatedly to force the GB all the way up to 20. Now slowly bobb the coil from 1 inch to 8 inches. Push (-) once per bobb, and at a particular point you should hear the audio change in two characteristics. The audio volume level should begin to go down as you approach balance, AND with a perfect balance you will hear NOTHING. Or you will come to a point where the audio level goes down and you hear both a high and low tone.

If going from 20 to 0 produces no tone or level changes, you may have very mild soil. Have you had other metal detectors in this area and been able to GB them? If yes, please post the make/models and where the knob or indicator was when GB was achieved, so the forum members can make an assessment of how mineralised your soil is.

Since this is our initial consultation I'm not going to charge you anything.

Happy Balancing

If it is I feel the same way as there is no high tone or low tone. I don't notice a high or low tone, but more of a tone coming or going. I am hard of hearing so it is hard to hear the threshold, but yet when I raise and lower the coil to the ground I either hear a slight tone either when I lower to the ground or raise it up, but not a high tone or low tone. I just adjust it until I don't hear a threshold change when lowering or raising the coil.

Thanks guys, I'm glad I'm not the only one having trouble hearing the GB tones. I have tried different headphones with volume controls and I get the same results. I'm doing everything right as far as ground balancing, it's just that it is so hard to hear the tones. The X-T50 is the only machine I have with a manual GB so I don't have any other machine to go by. Apparently, my soil is quite mild as I am able to use factory GB machines with no trouble. I find that 5 or 6 is about right on the X-T50
