Question for those who have the 4.5 x 7" Excelerator coil

After reading the recent small coil thread, I ordered a 4.5 x 7" Excelerator coil. I did some testing with my coin garden and was surprised to see that my targets were consistently reading 4 notches higher than they normally do on the conductive side. So zincolns were coming in at 43, clad dimes were consistently reading 48 and quarters were nulling in the coin pattern but registering 01-50 in an open screen. I played around with noise cancel and noticed a clear link between the channels and how they register on the target ID. What I discovered was that the conductive values gradually go up as the channel increases. Channels 1 through 3 were pretty much getting normal readings but the closer I went up to 11, the more likely quarters would start to read 49 or 50.

Have any of you who have this coil noticed something similar? I am trying to determine if I have a defective coil or if that is just the way it is. I have done similar tests with the pro coil and 6 * 8 SEF and have not seen any noticeable change with the TIDs and channel.

I guess I could just make sure I run the machine in a lower channel but I fear that I may go to some sites where a higher channel is more conducive to stable operation and I sure as heck don't want to be digging 01-50 targets!

Thanks

I notice it pushes my conductives an average of 2. No big deal, the sounds the key, especially at the edge of detectability. Then you can't depend on the numbers with any coil, at least in my dirt!

I've been running mine just over a year. After a real world test with two other machines on undug targets showed my previous small coil extremely lacking on what turned out to be edge on coins. This coil blows my old small coil away on them. I don't worry about the shift in numbers, its easy to deal with once you see how good it is.

Hi MD_Hunter , i have one of these 4.5x7" coils and you had me thinking i should try it out. All tests were away from coil @ 8" So i started @ channel 1 and i used a U.S. quarter and my reading was 12-45 and it stayed there until i got to 3 ,then on 4, it went to 12-47 and stayed there until 9 , and on channels 10 and 11, they were jumping from 03-48 to 06-49 . I have no problem with it other wise . This is my go to coil . And it will stay as my go to coil. It gets great depth and great seperation. If this becomes a problen , i will stay between channels 4 thru 9. But i don't think it will. Good luck ,GS

For me, I really didn't make much of a comparison with the stock coil. I bet, in the hundreds of hours I have on the Etrac, less than 5 were spent with the stock coil. I do know exactly what you are talking about with the 4.5x7 coil. It bothered me at first but since I almost always dig anything above 35 anyway, I don't really worry about it. As for the 1-50 targets, I never blocked them out after reading on this forum (banditicey was the name, I think) who had found a Morgan dollar with that reading. I never have understood why that area was blocked out on the factory coin program anyway.

Of the hundreds of hours I have spent on the Etrac, I would guesstimate that 95% was with the 4.5x7, the remaining 5% split between stock, WOT and 5" Excelerator. Amazing coil, BUT it certainly does have the little quirk you described. Trust me/us. Keep using it and it will soon be your absolute favorite coil!

One more thing, my suggestion would be to use Bill_S's trashy park program (modified as desired) when using the 4.5x7 and only use the coin stock program when using the stock coil.

Yes, I noticed the same thing with my 4.5" x 7" Coil - Wheat Cents will sometimes come in as 12 - 44's - clad Dimes as 12 - 47's - Quarters as 12 - 49's etc.

Do think that running on Channel #1 to keep the target ID numbers where they belong will greatly effect the performance / depth of the machine at some sites ?
