Question for those that use Gray Ghost headphones..

fwcrawford

Well-known member
I have a set of original gray ghost headphones and I have notice that when adjusting from max. volume to the next notch, there is a huge decrease in the volume.
If I adjust it down more the change is not as great, but the volume is very low by that point and not much use in adjusting it down further.
I called the manufacturer and was told that there is a large drop in volume from full to the next notch down.
This does not sound right to me as the volume is worthless if it can't be adjusted along the range of the control.
Actually, turning it down to the next notch below full volume makes the volume so low that if is not practical.
I thought I read a post a while back where someone stated that the volume control on their headphones was faulty and they had to send them back for repairs.
I also have a set of killer bee's and the volume control works great on these and allows for minute adjustments to suit my perferences.
Just wondering if anyone can give me their thoughts on this situation that have used the gray ghost headphones.
Thanks for any replies,
Felix

My Ghosts have a fairly noticeable drop from the max setting to the next, but that setting is still plenty loud for my ears. In fact, that's where I generally have them set when hunting.

When I go from full volume to the next notch down, I can still hear signals although there is a big difference.
Now if I go down further just to see how the control responds, it doesn't take much adjusting to get to the point I can't hardly hear anything..to me it is like most of the adjustment is in the first three notches on the control.
Is this similiar to what yours do?
Just want to make sure this is what to expect from the volume control.
Thanks for the replies,
Felix

Just tried mine to make sure. The loudest setting is too loud for my hearing comfort wise. The next click down is a touch on the loud side, but usable and that's where I usually have them set. The second click (third volume level) down is adequate, but on the soft side for my preference any way. From there on down they get softer, but in pretty small increments until completely silent. This of course is in relation to my hearing. Hope this is helpful.

I think it has something todo with the limiting circut.....
Yes turning the volumn down from max goes rather quickly...thats why I clipped the limiting resister in mine.

Thanks for the reply Jim,
Did you notice any difference in the response of the volume after clipping the resister?
Is the volume control more responsive now than before?
Thanks again,
Felix

I'll have to check it..it may not be more responsive but I think max volume is louder...

I wanted a more passive noise reduction from the outside noise so I purchased the larger bodied single volume Detector Pro brand headphones (Bushmaster, Grey Ghost, Nugget Busters) to get more of a higher decimal rating for outside noise than my standard smaller bodied single volume Killer Bee's. I liked the Detector Pro headphones but sent them back for the same reason, with the volume control in one spot the volume was just a little to low on the next spot or notch they were way to loud. Detector Pro needs to put in a more finite volume control like the Killer Bee phones this would solve that problem.

* The info below is a little off track from your question but to solve my problem this is what I did..

Then I took a chance thinking I would not like them and ordered the Koss QZ99 passive reduction headphones to get more outside noise reduction and there great. There a little more bulky (built very solid) and don't fold up like the Killer Bee's or Grey Ghost Detector Pro phones. Kellyco sells the Koss QZ99 passive noise reduction phones for around $80.00 but I found them on Amazon for $37.00 and feel they were a great purchase for what I wanted. They have great sound, built well like a tank, they have a single volume control which I prefer, they fit well and really knock down the outside noise (great for surf hunting to keep the noise down). Koss also says on the box they were designed for metal detectors. They were a 1/4 the cost of the Detector Pro headphones and the volume control has a real nice finite control allowing you to dial them in how you like.

You will notice that there a little more bulky and do not fold up, they are comfortable and block out noise very well. Do a web search for Koss QZ99 noise reduction headphones or image search to see some good pic's of them. I wanted them for surf hunting to quiet the ocean down but I like them enough that I think I will use them over my Killer Bee's because of the better noise reduction unless it's so hot outside that I just can not stand it. If that happens I will go for the lighter Killer Bee phones which are a great pair of phones as well.

If you decide to get them, let me know if you like them as much as I do.

Thanks.:beers:

I've asked the same question on the Detector Pro forum awhile back and never did get a reply. From what I've read here, seems to be the nature of the beast.

Bill, 1/4" or 1/8" plug on the QZ99s?

They will do both. The Koss QZ99 phones come with a gold plated 1/4" adapter that the 1/8" plug on the headphone plugs into (it's a very solid clean set up and it works well). Koss does this on a lot of there phones so they can be used on smaller devices with the 1/8" plug in if needed.

Yeah,
I've come to the same conclusion from the responses to my post.
Just thought I'd ask in case mine were defective.
