Question for the experts

Could someone please give an explanation of what are the advantages to detecting in the Iron Mask Mode rather than the Smartfind Discrimination Mode. I have been reading a lot of posts lately from some very experienced and successful Explorer users who seem to prefer the Iron Mask Mode over the Discrimination Mode, and I was wondering what the advantages of using this mode could be, other than having a more opened screen and discriminating fewer targets. I had assumed that it was better to use a higher discrimination if you were coin hunting. But if there are definite benefits to using the Iron Mask Mode, I would appreciate knowing what they are. Thanks for your help.

I'm no expert by any imagination but a couple
reasons would be debth, 2-3 more inches if your
going nice & slow.
Another would be target averaging, two targets
very close together are going to average signal.
Thats why you want to dig the unusual signal if
you don't want to miss any old coins, esp. if
their deep. HH...j.g.

Basically the less you disc out the better chance the explorer has to see something near trash.. also the explorer doesnt have to recover from a null which is what happens over disced out stuff.. You must swing very slowly in any null to give the explorer a chance to see something accepted in it, if your running iron mask the only time you null is in iron, so the explorer will recover much faster.. It will also help you learn the audio of all targets, good or bad, learn those..and every once in a while you get something really neat that you would otherwise have disced out..

One additional comment. It's not the iron mask per se, it's the lesser amount of discrimination for all the reasons Jim described. In other words you can set up an iron mask -10 screen and also discriminate out bottlecaps, run in the discriminate mode, and it will have a similar effect to running in the iron mask mode.

Thanks guys for the explanations. It makes a great deal more sense to me now, and I can definitely understand the advantages to using iron mask over the discrimination mode in the certain situations that you described.
