Question for Tabdog:

slingshot

Active member
I asked this on another forum you posted (metal detecting forum) and I guess you haven't been there to answer. Does that ring you found (registered at iron) give a signal on your Silver at min. disc? Just curious as to whether the min. disc. on the Silver was close enough to iron to pick it up. Sorry, I'm a knowledge freak and trying to learn my Silver.

Hay Sling Shot,

Howdy.

You asked:

Does that ring you found (registered at iron) give a signal on your Silver at min. disc?
Just curious as to whether the min. disc. on the Silver was close enough to iron to
pick it up. Sorry, I'm a knowledge freak and trying to learn my Silver.

I had to go and check it.

I checked a few other things too.

I seem to learn something every time I do this.

I have had some comments on this. Some dis-believers probably.

One thing is that there is a difference in how the different discriminators act.

But this is why I made the statement about the ring registering as iron.

I just checked it. Here is where it discriminated out on my Compadre.

11-5-1.jpg

It amaized me because it is so far below foil.

To answer the question.

The Silver Sabre uMax discriminated the ring at 3. That may be much closer
to foil.

It would respond at close to 4".

The Silver will also pick up this tiny speck at close to 3".

Now that's 0.024 grams. Very small piece of gold.

The Compadre gets about as good of depth on the ring as the Euro. That's a
supprise. That's right at 4". Just bairly more than the Silver.

But then I had a supprise when the Euro Sabre registered above foil on the ring?

So, maybe it does not register at iron on all discriminators.

All I can say is live and learn.

I can only report what I find.

I can not make it make sense.

But I did learn a few things here.

Thank's for prompting me to check that.

Happy Huntin,

thanks for checking. I noticed that I found several rings that appeared to have the same size characteristics on my Silver at min. disc. and I saw a pic of the Compadre and realized that min. disc. on the Silver appeared to act as if just right about nails. Was glad to find this info-I was worried after I posted that it was a useless post and thought I should've PM'ed you instead. It may now help others who are serious about their machines. Thanks, again. Ken

I know what flashed through your brain, that's a bit close to iron for comfort,
Tell me one thing how can anyone go detecting set the Disc at iron and come away not thinking what you could of missed ??????.
Take care
Dave/Holey Dollar

Hay HD,

I know where you are commin from.

It may be more the fact that if disc is used,

lots of the really hard to detect stuff just

doesn't respond, what ever it may air test.

Quarters can dissapear at 4" deep under

some circumstances.

It is just that I feal that I should keep an

open mind and discriminator if I want to

recover some of the nice stuff that others

miss. That's how I get my gold.

It's a leap in faith, knowing that my efforts

will produce eventually. Just got to like doing

it, or I would never hold out for that long.

I am concerned but Wally World doesn't allow me that much time to search, so I've limited my a/m searches with my Silver to tot lots. Anywho, ya'll got me interested again so I went to one of my schools with the gravel playyards and tried a/m. Found a tiny charm that wouldn't register in disc. mode along with the usual nails and paper clips. I DID find two dimes that were with a washer, but unfortunately I found the washer last and forgot to check it in disc. mode before I dug. Interesting subject.

Thats why it SO IMPORTANT to know what is discriminated out at what particular settin on each individual machine. FOR INSTANCE... when I got my used Cibola, I noticed that when the discrim was set to a little past the 5 cents setting it still would pick up a nickel. So I called Tesoro and they told me it WAS JUST A REFERENCE POINT.. BUT... they also told me that some knobs get put on in slightly different positions then others,, so at the advice of the tech at Tesoro I had spoken with, I loosened the little hex had set screw holding the knob onto the dicrimination , and turned the switch until it corresponded correctly with the knob and discriminated a nickel out just as it reached the 5 cents position on the knob. Very simple, and now it notches what it should where it should. . Now everybody is happy.

Hay Steve,

I figured that out about the reference point and the set screw.

After that little air test, I have started re-setting the reference
point on my knobs where I want it.

Even though:

I have developed a method that negates the need to do that.
I don't know what caused me to start doing this. But it was
probably because the discriminators are different.

But my method is a search habbit.

When I get to a site, I will dig a penny and notice the break
point. It is then fresh on my mind. I continue to do that with
a pull tab, foil, nail and so on.

It doesn't have to be in that order or even those paticular items.
But the point is that I know at each site the break points are.

I think the way targets act can differ sometimes from site to
site. That is the original reason I told myself I was doing that.

But this thread is interesting and helpful for me to understand
how to better be in touch with my machines.

Now I'm glad I made the comment about the ring's break point.
Even if my comment may not have been totally accurate for all
metal detectors, it did cause me to learn something.

EVERYBODY should do it. I know that if I turn the disc up to iron on my Silver, the small rings are gone-so there's only one answer for a serious Silver umax user-All the way down. I tested alongside my Ace 250 (forgive me for mentioning!) and the small charm was only picked up in all metal-I was hoping it would be picked up in relic mode. No matter which detector, certain things remain the same-but by testing you'll know to get the most out of your detector. After today's excursion (big word for hunt) I figured I would start hunting in all metal-after all, if it's a regular site and you pick up the trash- the next few trips should be clear sailing and you'll get all the goodies the "regulars" miss.
