Question for Steve (or anyone).......

D&P-OR

Well-known member
Steve----I've been reading your detector list for the umpteenth time---great info!-------My question is: On the MXT & hunting for gold, would the 6 X 8 SEF coil be as good as (or better than) the Whites 5 X 10 DD?-----Wanting to know what kind of performance could be expected on those two coils (one versus the other) as far as performance for gold hunting & in very mineralized ground?--------Thanks, Del

Del; Is the SEF a DD coil? If not I would go with the Whites 5x10. I had a MXT with a 5x10 DD and it was a good gold finder. Seemed to have better depth than the GMT.

Hi Darrel-----Yes, the SEF's are DD coils (butterfly coils).-----Nobody seems to be using them for gold hunting but they do handle mineralized ground exceptionally well.-----I guess because of the physical shape of the 5 X 10 and the hunt conditions at hand (getting in between rocks, etc.) the 5 X 10 may be the better choice of the two.------I know the 6 X 8 SEF I had for my Etrac really got good depth and target separation but that was turf (park) hunting.-----Just got to wondering how effective the SEF made for the MXT would be for gold hunting.

Hey Del,

I have the SST (MXt Offshoot)and both coils.
The 6x10 behaves better at high gain and is deeper in my opinion. But the Sef Hits harder on small foil and at a quicker sweep. You can overdrive both coils but the Sef seems hotter and quicker on the response sensitivity goes through the roof but Id is compromised some larger non ferrous targets ID as Iron or hot rocks. But all that being said I'm hitting lots of earrings cranking up the gain with the SEF. Since I put it on I find jewelry every time I go out (mostly earrings) not always gold or silver but its about the #s. Both are great coils the sef is noticeably lighter not as good in the brush though
I just went and re hit a sled run that I hit with the sef but this time I took the 6x10 because I wanted to stuff it in the bushes as much as possible and it paid off. I hit a 1963 10k class ring WM New Jersey a silver ring I'm not sure if its a mans or woman's but it has 48 cubics around it I thought it was junk at first.
Both coils took jewelry from this winter play area the SEF cleaned up the open areas and the 6x10 did the hard work in the bushes. Being that there is about 10 to 15 feet of snow over thick brush in the winter allot of the goodies melt into the bushes. About 45% of it is undetectable and over grown but if you drive by in the winter people are having barbecues and partying it up.
I haven't hit the gold fields with the SEF yet but it is slightly more sensitive so for small shallow nuggets the sef would be my choice but at the point the nuggets hit a gram or over the 6x10 is going to do punch it out deeper. For me the SEF only has advantages in the first 6 inches of soil over the 6x10 and only on sub gram gold, nugget or jewelry, and only overdirveing the coil.
If that makes since.

Have fun

Jim------That's exactly the info I was trying to find out about those two coils.----VERY informative & thanks so much for posting it---I really appreciate it.-----Del

Funny, but never having used the coils I would have said exactly the same thing. More size almost always equals better coverage and depth on larger targets, smaller sharper signal on small stuff. I know for my purposes the Whites coil would be better as I would prefer the coverage and closed coil. If I want small gold I have the Shooter. But that is just me.

Hey Del

I forgot to mention that the Sef starts being over driven at a lower point on the gain about 8 and a half ( at least on the SST cant speak for the MXT supposed to have the same gain) where the 6x10 doesn't kick into overdrive until after 10. Hence the extra stability. So you can really push that SEF hard and one other thing is on tiny stuff only the center three to 4 inches of the coil are hot so you have to sweep a tight pattern. The sef is slightly more effected by really bad EMI but operates where my G2 cannot. I wish I could see a picture of the magnetic field of both coils. The SEF almost feels like two monos focused into the center. Slightly different behavior than a regular DD that feels more blade like. I didn't like the 12 x15 I had on a excal It had a hard time with shallow targets. I haven't used the 4,6 shooter but hear really good things I'm going to have to give one a shot.

Really in my opinion and others the MXT should come stock with the 6x10. Dave J has stated in reports that the 6x10 is the coil it was designed around and personally feels the 950 is sluggish.
To some extent the sef makes the 6x10 feel sluggish. But I'm just not seeing the extra depth talked about and not why I bought the coil. Yes it has the normal benefits of a small coil but to anyone who has used a SEF you know it behaves a little different weather on a etrac or a MXT than a regular DD.. I wanted a smaller coil for Jewelry hunting and am very happy with it, its a good trade off between the 4x6 and the 6x10. Ill just say it If the SEF had a solid coil cover I wouldn't put the 6x10 back on ever for my style of hunting . But that's just me!:detecting:
Keith Southern compares the two on you tube He thinks the SEF has a little better mineral see through than the stock coil. Might want to check it out, his videos are always good.

Have fun

Yeah, I've often wondered why the MXT doesn't come stock with the 5 X 10 as that is the coil that the MXT was designed around.---It's all about sales for Whites I guess.

Great thing about the Whites line are the coil options between units..The 14khz coils cover so many machines, the 50khz so many. Agreed on the 10x5, MXT likes it and I regard it as the best coil for it.
