Question for Reale guys

Hey Reale guys, have a question. Found an 1778 1/2 Reale in a plow field. Is knicked up and slightly bent and worn a bit. Doesnt appear to be key date or worth much. Was ghinking of cleaning and straightening??? Any comments front Reale guys? How bout you CTTodd?
Thanks,
Mike

Hi,
I'll help if I can. Your right it's a half. Straightening can be tough. These coins can be brittle I would be very gentile with it and would have the coin very warm before I tried it. I think it's cool with a little character. As for putting a little shine back on it. IMHO old silver coins look stupid all shined up But I do think that a little bit of controlled shine on the raised surfaces makes some nice appeal. I use a product called Never Dull. It's polish that is on Cotton wading. Done this way you can go slow and start and finish at your speed. When guys use the tarnish removers you see on TV it all goes away and very fast all or nothing. Try some go slow make it look the way you like it. It's a great find congrats.

Thanks Todd, Zi respect your opinion! I just rubbed it with olive oil earlier today. I too like to have some character and a little polish on the high points with patina in the cracks . Also, like the warm coin comment, kinda like annealing with gold jewelry , makes sense. Almost passed on the 12-37 iffy tone, passed hundreds of like signals in the past. Still not sure what made me dig it. I guess maybe the site age and history. Found it 150' away from 2 reale I found a couple months ago.
Thanks for the comments !

Good luck with it. Go slow. They are my favs not trying to take your thread but posted a picture below that shows some with just the raised areas brought up. Reales are hard to come by. I'm on a roll this year.

Your doing good for sure and they look good. Just wondering how it feels when one comes up with a hole in it? Does it crush you? Never found a love token or holed coin, bit have many in collection. I would think it would be the same feeling when you pull a coin that you have scratched badly or in bent or poor shape, thanks for the input!

Some holes in Reales usually larger holes are for love tokens, but the holes you see in the ones in the picture are there for stringing the coins. They put the small coins on strings to keep track of them. I have found 3 1/2s and a 1 Reale this year. None of them were holed. I'd be glad to dig a couple more before the freeze holed or not.

"Keep track of them" ??? Now thats an oxymoron! Seems like that only worked sometimes, as depicted in your handful. All your finds were in plow fields or find any in unexpected spots? Is that largest a 2 Reale? You find any cobbs? I guess thats the next on my bucket list along with DeBloom!
