question for mxt relic hunters

I'm an old school relic hunter. Still hunting strictly by ear. I've got several places I've been hunting for years that I feel still has some good stuff in the ground, but because of all the trash I believe my old detector has shot its load, at least for these spots. My question for you mxt guys who relic hunt is, will the mxt be a good machine to get for more depth and to read thru this trash , especially aluminum. I'm in the market for a new detector, even though I hate to use my ole 66 as a back up, I'm seriously considering the mxt. For you guys with experience , what do you think?

I use mine in trashy areas and for me it does good. I use the relic mode with the trigger forward. That puts it in a all metal mode with iron as a low tone and good targets in a high tone. The trick is to swing the coil REALLY, REALLY slow. I mean just about moving it and listen good. It will be NOISE, but you'll be able to seperate the targets. JMO I've owned mine for about 7 years and thats all I hunt in. Again this is just how I use it.

Howdy 2much,
Im not by any means an old pro at this.
But I have been using the Relic mode , trigger forward (Alternate ) alot lately.
Ive been hunting campgrounds and fishin areas,, LOTS OF TRASH
EVERYBODY seems to drink beer and pop while camping and/or fishing. DANG IT.
2 days ago, i was on a" wet black muck dirt bank" next to a lake.
I was diggin down to 10' inches alot
most were old beer cans .
I do use the DD 6x10, and it seems if I get a mixed siganal, I can ""rock the coil""??
and it will pick out the different tones .if there are 2 objects.
I love my MXT,, just have to get to know her better.
Good luck to ya,
Dusty

With ears trained as good as yours, an MXT with the right coil and a good pair of HP's you'll be unstoppable. Go for it !

My research showed the mxt to be THE machine I needed for relic hunting. It has enough power and coupled with a head like the 6x10 for separation it's a monster. I found some old wrought nails in my front yard about 10" down.

My best opinion is, yes the MXT is a great relic machine. It has found me alot of relics over the years. The small concentric coil is great in trash, BUT if I'm in a good relic area, I dig everything that makes a sound anyway. You never know why some things give off an erratic tone due to ground minerals or masking. I'm just always afraid of leaving the find of a lifetime in the ground,

Hi - I search in the UK and am with the above as regards settings (zero discrim) - you hear everything - after a while you can hear a good signal amongst the rubbish - it's that good

Moving up to the MXT gives you more than just an audible response, but you still have to master it all.

Yes and no. Yes, the MXT can get you better depth than an old '66' TR, but only when you have it properly adjusted AND there is no masking trash to hamper depth. No, you are not going to 'read thru trash' especially if you're trying to get deeper good targets with shallower and possibly abundant trash to hamper performance.

The MXT, with the 5.3 Eclipse coil (6

Hello,
I agree with Monte on the 5.3 coil for trashy areas. I've been on club hunts in trashy areas where the MXT with the 5.3 coil runs circles around lots of other detectors. I do a fair bit of relic hunting and for my uses the 10"DD is my relic coil. It will go deeper than the 6x10. If you are relic hunting in a plowed field, a highly mineralized field, or the woods where a tree may have grown over top of relics, the extra depth you get from the 10"DD will make a difference. Just my opinion and experience. John
