Question for monte

Monte I have a x5 and Troy says when you can not gb because of neutral soil (would be like trying to gb in air) to use the fixed gb.That is simple enough because the x5 has a fixed gb setting.My question is how do I set my Tejon up when hunting in neutral soil like we have in the part of SC that I live? thanks ronnie

<STRONG><BIG>IF</STRONG></BIG> the soil truely is "neutral and similar to air," why do you have to ground balance at all? Why use a 'Fixed GB' setting?

Perhaps the way to address the "neutral ground" topic is to caution: <span style="background-color:#ffff00;">Make sure you have a sufficient ground balance or a functional ground balance so that operation in the Discriminate mode doesn't incur falsing.</span> Naturally, that implies that it isn't a matter of whether or not you can manually adjust a hearable GB in All Metal, it is that you make sure you do not have a too negative or too positive GB so that you'll have good general performance.

Put about a tablespoon full of soft iron filings in a small plastic container and ground balance to that. This will put your machine about where most fixed GB detectors are set. (Common rebar is a good source of soft iron). A piece of ferrite will also do the job, but I prefer the iron.

The term <EM><STRONG>Power Balancing</STRONG></EM> is one I have used for many years to explain how you can set the GB of many detectors using the <FONT COLOR="#ff0000">Discriminate</FONT> mode.
Naturally, this is not going to apply to any model that has a factory preset GB for the Disc. mode. It will apply to those models featuring circuitry whereby the manual GB adjustmnt of the All Metal mode also provides the reference for the Discriminate mode.
Sometimes you might find yourself hunting a site where, for whatever reason, you have a problem setting the GB in All Metal. <span style="background-color:#ffff00;">To "Power Balance" do the following:</span>
► Try to locate a spot of ground where there isn't any interfering metal target.
► Make sure you have a proper slight audio threshold setting in All Metal.
► Set the Sensitivity as high as possible w/o chatter and interference.
► Select the Discriminate mode.
► Hold the search coil about 6"-8" above the ground to start.
► Bob the coil towards-and-away from the ground, quickly lowering the coil from the 6"-8" height down to about
