Question for Monte or Tesoro user:

I keep my old Royal Sabre around that I purchased from another guy and use it in high trash areas. Such was the case today-but I ventured from the trashy sidelines of an old football field now used by joggers back onto the playing field surface that I had previously hunted with my Silver umax and Garrett Ace. Much to my surprise coins-and they had been there a while, judging by the yuck on them-started popping out everywhere. My question is: even though the Royal is older technology (or is it?), do I have a better machine than I thought-is it's circuitry and such better than the Silver umax, for instance? Thanks.

Are you using the white, open-center 8" coil that was standard with the Royal Sabre? What settings are you using? Similar to the Silver

Thanks, Monte. I was so astonished that I left out all the details. Actually, I've been over the area several times-once with the 4" coil and once with the 8" open coil(standard) on the Silver. I was using the 4" coil on the Royal for two reasons: it's the only one I have left on it:biggrin:, and mainly because I was searching the high trash area surrounding the field. There was a high trash section on the field that drove both the other detectors crazy with trash, so I thought I'd search it. I found two quarters at 5"-quite a feat w/the 4" coil, I thought-especially in notch mode. Then, after that I did exactly what you said in your post-I switched to lowest disc and had the tones "break" at tabs and immediately started hitting signals where I'd already been. One thing I forgot to mention, it seemed as if the Royal's response was more rapid than the Silver's. At first I thought it wasn't picking up the targets as well as the Silver, with it's seemingly long signal, then I realized it was recovering faster, apparently. My reasoning was that the deeper targets were still being found-even the quarters didn't seem to hang on long in sound as compared to the Silver-but depth wasn't affected. Your advice is valued and a 5.75" coil is about to be ordered for the Royal, NOT the Silver. Thanks again.

I've never been one to be too concerned about "older technology" if whatever device was doing well for me. It sounds like you're doing quite well with the older machine, so use it and enjoy.

Well, this is kinda embarrassin'- after reading Monte's comments I pulled the "reverse" test and went back over the field again with the Silver and -you know what happened. MORE coins that "mr proffesional" missed, even with the Royal.:lmfao: You gotta pass the coil over them:drinking: But in all honestly, the Royal DOES have a faster reset-but the Silver can be swept slower and do great, also. I also like the tone ID while in the lowest discrimination setting, also. It's kinda like having a Golden umax that I considered-but with only 3 tones. Sorry for the negative post on the Silver-it wasn't necessary and I still love it's ability to switch from a/m to lowest disc for mode comparison testing. Dang! I wonder just how many targets are in this old field.:tesoro:

Don't be embarassed. It's an eye opener that you proved that no one gets it all so quickly, and a good lesson to all of us. It's the main reason I don't mind hunting several areas near home often as I alway come up with a bit more.

All the umax coils have worked on mine. And I imagine all but the HOT technology coils will work. I, too, am going to get the 5.75" coil for mine. I only have a 4" coil, from my Silver umax to use on mine.
