Question for Excalibur II owners

I hit the surf yesterday and it was really rough. I noticed that as I and the machine were hit with waves it would give off a tone, like their was a target there when there wasn't. Is this normal?

I have also tried the auto position even though I don't use it, I wanted to check it out and it doesn't appear to be working, unless I am doing something wrong. When in auto I cannot get a smooth threshold and the machine chatters in all sorts of tones? The battery was fully charged,,,,

Here are the settings I have been running in

Disc = 3

Sens = 11 O'clock or 1:00

Threshold = Slight buzz, like gentle buzz of a bee

Volume = 3/4's to full...nice and loud but not insane

Disc/Pinpoint = Disc

I'm new, so you may need to follow up with someone who is more knowledgeable on these matters........My Excal. II 1000 is set........ Disc. 1>>>>>>Sen... 12:00......Thresh.......till you can barely hear it, then down just a hair more......................I've never fooled with auto......try these settings or seek advice directly from someone else........As far as a tone with a wave coming across the coil, I've had some chatter but never a "tone" that I would mistake for a signal.
Good luck and Happy Hunting. :cheers:

Hi. I also have a excall 1&2. when are you having the falseing.Are you in the water or on the water line? On rough days i had to turn the sen.to 3:00 . When you are on the water line when the coil hits the water it will false. This new coil is the problem.Because it is to sens.This coil [tornado] is great for my SOV. GT but sucks in the water. You can keep running at 3or 4:00 or you can send it back to Rob.at minelab an have them put the bbs 1000 back on .I sent mine back an put the bbs back on . I also added a pair of gray ghost head phones. I got it back fri. I really love it. So much im selling my other excall 7 months old.

No I am in the water, and it was really rough that day. So I don't plan on getting pounded like that again anyway so maybe I will be alright. Someone had lost a diamond wedding band that morning and someone showed me where they lost it, but it was really to rough to search although I gave it a try until I got knocked down a few times lol..

Is your coil wire nice and snug on the shaft? If it is loose, this will give you some falsing. I use an Excal 1000, with the 10" Tornado coil and usually run my sens at the 12 oclock position, and slight threshold. Got rough on us yesterday, and I had minimal falsing. You could also try wiggling the coil wire at different positions on the shaft and see what happens, could be a broken wire in there somewhere.

is frequency changes as the water and foam pass over the coil. Also have you cleaned out your coil cover?........sand can cause falsing when it is inside your coil.

...He's been having issues and they sound similar. He suspects coil leakage.

I'm sure you'll get it straightened out. Most of my issues are "operator headspace." :lol:

Hey Mate,
The Excal is pretty simple to operate even if you're new to it. The Excal will false upon entry into the water, perfectly normal as it is adjusting to the salt in the water.(saline solutions are conductive) The threshold sounds like it is set too high, it should sound like a bee at 10 feet not a bee near your ear. Disc should be at the stop counter clockwise and you need never touch it again. (iron will null out and foil tones might just be a ladies gold ring with diamonds so forget about disc) How hot you can run sensitivity will depend a lot upon your beach conditions, mineralization, wave action, rockiness; basically anything that will make your Excal false when you're running it hot and you want to run it hot once you get the hang of it. Auto Sens is a beginner mode and you can try it for a while but get out of it as soon as possible, then never use it again. I run my Excal around 10 - 10:30 whenever possible but you may have to back off to 12 or even 1 o'clock.(depends a lot on beach conditions and Bermuda has no black sand so I can run a little hotter than most can get away with) Expect to have a little falsing at the end of your swing until you get the hang of feathering the end of your swing, this is also normal with VLF machines.

I'm pretty sure I have a slightly damaged coil but I've got a lot of hours on my Excal, mine falses for a while after I leave the water or in the transition zone where air and water are mixing as the surf moves in and out - a pretty good sign that I've sprung some kind of leak so it's just a question of time before I hear the final death squeal from my Excal and have to get the coil replace. Fortunately, I just picked up a CZ-21 to hold me over while the Excal is in for overhaul. The learning curve will be interesting as it's one thing to hunt with a machine you know and another to swing a very different machine. That's part of the fun though.

Cheers,

BDA:cool:

Yeah the falsing in the waveline thinhg happens to me too. when shes completely sunmerged (the coil) that stops...unless I get smacked with a good waves and the coil lifts to the side. Rough, windy, days blow goats and your excal whines about having to work on those days.
