QUESTION FOR ERIC

Normally, the Goldquest does not need an external battery. The battery pack fits inside the control box on the GQ. Do you have a link or pic of the detector in question? You can look at the new ones on the Surfscanner website and see there is no external battery on either GQ model. Earlier models were basically the same battery wise, but used a smaller housing.

Reg

This would be one of the earlier PI models that was called Goldquest. Not to be confused with a later detector with the same name. The early Goldquest was similar to the Goldscan 4 but minus the ground cancel circuitry. Complete battery boxes and spares have not been available now for many years, however, the plastic box is available from Maplin. Other parts such as jack socket, fuse etc could also be purchased there; maybe the curly cable too. If anyone needs part numbers, I can probably find them.

Eric.

The Goldscan (450-550) pulses per second and the Goldquest (1500 p.p.s.) that were on the market 1992-1995 or so both had a belt mount Nicad battery pack. So though the detectors themselves weighed only 3.5lbs there was another 3 lbs of battery pack to be carried !

Hi Ken,

You are right. I never knew that model of Goldquest was made. Sorry about my adding confusion.

Reg

Hi Reg and All,

It's a problem to think up new names for a detector, so as there was quite a time gap between the two quite different models, so I used the name again.

Eric.

Hi, I've got one these detectors, and i made a spare battery pack for when i out detecting for long periods.
I think i got the batteries from Budget Batteries (online), i could take mine apart and take some pics for you if you want.

You can buy the batteries from this site, go down this list and look for pulse power, they are ready made,

Hello Eric.
I have won the mentioned Goldquest. If it works then i got it at a good price.
Just need to make up the Battery for it.
I have 2 questions for you. Is it a 14.4 volt batt. pack i need to be making? And would it be best to get the highest Mha rating?
Oh sorry 3rd question, is it obvious where the wiring goes?

Dave.

Hi Dave,

I'm pleased you won the Goldquest and hope it is in working order.

The battery is 14.4V so 12 cells. The voltage rises to about 17V when fully charged, but that is OK and it soon comes down. The higher the mAH, the longer the detector will run on a charge.

As you have the battery box, you will need to put a Mini Tamiya connector on the battery. These are available from RC model stores and on ebay.

Make sure you get the connector the right way round on the red and black leads. Get it wrong - caput!

Eric.

Excellent. I've aready got a couple of the Tamiya connectors in my bits box.

Thanks For your help.
Best wishes.
Dave.

Have you thought of using a lipo battery, say a 4 cell 14.8v, a 5000mah will only set you back 20 quid, much cheaper than the nimh, lighter and would last longer, although you would need a charger specific for it(15pounds+/-), but you can charge them much faster, just a thought as you will need to get a charger too for either pack.
battery and charger

A grain of sand on the beach compared to your help:thumbup:,
I now use this charger for all my detector batteries, also i have rejuvinated 2 x Sov XS packs, 1 x excalibur pack that only lasted a couple of hours also 2 drill batteries with the charger, i'm also waiting for some lipos to use in the Sovereign to replace the old nicads. the only problem that i foresee is the discharge limit, any detector would need to have a cutoff voltage so as not to over discharge(this causes damage) the lipos to less than 3v per cell, say 3.2 to be safe, if needed the same mah packs come with greater discharge limits although i think 15c(75amp) should be enough

Me to !!
Thanks for the links.
I know you have to be carefull with these things, But they seem ideal for what i need.

This is typical of the UK.
The price over here for the same thing is around $90 instead of $30.

I'll look further into it.

Postage from hongkong is $12 to spain, well worth the wait(10-14 days)faster i think to UK.
Contact excalme in this thread he's in uk and just got one of the chargers, he will have better info on postage costs customs etc

chaddy, the link you posted in the UK is for a 20c discharge, the one i posted is 15c hence some of the difference, the higher the discharge rate the more expensive they are although its not relative to us with metal detectors, to the RC guys it is as the higher the discharge the greater the speed(usually)

Thanks for that Kered.
I would like to go down the Lipo path for sure.
I should be able to get sorted out one way or the other.
And this will be a good machine to get used to Pulse detecting on.
As Churchill said one time, "We will find stuff on the beaches", Think thats what he said !!
