Question For DFX Gregg?

RLOH

Well-known member
Gregg, I got to ask a few questions regarding your hunting sites. Do you hunt parks, schools, and etc? If so, you must be close to getting them cleaned out. Do you hunt local spots or do you travel? 100 coin days are pretty routine for you. A good day of hunting for me is 30 to 40 coins. I could never dig as many coins as you and if I did, I would be so sore, I couldn't hunt for a week. Keep on digging. Good luck and good health. R.L.

I hunt mainly parks. The parks I hunt are probably 1/2 a mile around. I hunt very slowly and even slower now that I am trying to pick up more silver and wheaties...Even though I hunt slow I pinpoint very well (or the dfx does) and recover quickly. The cents make up 57% of my finds. There are cents everywhere in the parks I hunt. Using tone id on with the dfx easily separates coins and trash. My coin to trash ratio has to be 8 or 10 to 1...unless I dig every signal...which where I hunt would drive you insane!

As far as being sore I am all the time...that is why I have not hunted since Saturday. I try to get in 3 hunts a week now 4. Tone id on...made all the difference...probably would have quit without it...not for everyone but would have been impossible for me without it...

I use a home made swingy thingy which keeps the coil almost in a scrubbing position while I hunt. It allows you to let go of the detector and it does not fall to the ground...especially nice in the cold when your fingers start to get numb... also while recovering very quick rather then having to set detector on ground.

As far as how many coins I have found...remember I started hunting in January, could not hunt in february (record cold) and actually average only 60-61 coins a trip. Yes I have had a lot of 100 coin days. I try to get one a week. Actually I have been thinking about trying to get two a week, have been able to a few times...but usually after that I need at least two days off. It is to a point I want to hit 10,000 and never try it again...because I do post on 4 forums and get a lot of private messages and support. A few coin shooters who have gone over 10,000 told me it was possible based on location, amount of hunts, and coin average...so I agreed. Now it is a race to get there before the cold...Need to get it done before December.

If you ever wonder how many parks there are in a large city of 2 million people...imagine a park every single 2-3 miles in every direction as well as all the schools. I hunt schools also but not as much. I will when my parks dry up start to drive further but now all hunts are within 8 miles of my house...In that radius there are going all directions...probably..20-30 parks easily. Widen that radius to 15 miles and it goes over 50! I made a list last winter as well as directions to all of them..So doubt I will ever run out of places...also a park 1/2 block from house...and a forest preserve area that runs for miles and is large within a mile...I could hunt for 2 lifetimes and not be done...I would think this is the same for anyone in a large city...

I would like to know to. Any tips? How many hours of the day do you hunt? What do you do for a living? Not personal just looking for tips

:detecting:I work midnights, get off at 8am. I am a police officer and my wife stays at home. So I am able to hunt any morning on way home from work. As far as tips...sure..

First stamina...are you physically able to hunt 3-4 hours minimum? I do not plan a hunt shorter then 3 hours...if I do it is only because daughter is at dentist or something like that...

two- location do you live in a heavily populated area? I live in a city of 2 million, like to hunt on my own and rarely stop to chat...unless approached then I am polite..

Three- do you have a lot of parks unlimited? If you do they should not and could not be drying up...unless heavily hunted by others...I do have a few parks that are regularly hunted by others...no insult but most seem unable to hunt anywhere but the woodchips...and then maybe an hour..which again goes back to how long you can or have time to hunt. Finding a lot of coins is a challenge...

Four- do you ever have a good day? If you don't sorry to say maybe it is you or a defective detector....

five do you have a quality detector? Do you know how to use it? I see to many people asking questions that are clearly defined in the owners manual...

As far as individual tips...speedy recovery with accurate pinpointing...
I try not to kneel down on ground..I bend and stay on feet...requires a good set of knees.

Do not sit trying to figure out if a coin is a great find or not...plenty of time to look at home...move on..

I am more comfortable hunting with less people around...but in my area does not take long for parks to get highly active...point get used to hunting around people...

Hunt where people gather...sit..bleachers...sidelines...so on..

None of this is rocket science...I know most know this already..

I would say the two main things are location and ability and knowledge to complete whatever you are doing or hunting for.. :detecting:

I also received a private message from another person on forum who said he has the same type of situation as me and takes full advantage of it also. :detecting:

Yes it was......

Thats a classic reply! its all THERE, short and concise. New people to the hobby should STUDY your response. Stamina, patience, courtesy. Its all there!!! Youre a great asset to the hobby...and youre modest about your finds...

Thanks for the kind words...when you respond to someone and as I always do...try to be 100% honest and straight forward...I never know how people will respond! Glad to see there are others out there thinking on the same wave length!

I will be glad when I hit 10,000 and it is over...next year hopefully I can find more silver and less coins!:detecting:
