Question: Does using different size coils affect the VDI numbers? :)

Yes it does but not by much. The stock 9.5 gives the most actuate readings.

Hillbilly Bob said it right. Coils other than the stock coil that comes with the machine are after-market and are possibly up to 2 numbers off, but that's not bad at all. Also, some are right on the money. Once you use "that" coil, you will get the best use of it.

was because I see no difference if any in the VDI numbers displayed with both the Eclipse 5.3 coil and the 9.5 coil, but read somewhere that using the DD coil may throw the numbers off slightly. Thanks for the information, much appreciated. Please have a great day! Kelley (Texas) :)

I see no real difference in VDI with any of my 4 coils, I have 2 Whites and 2 excelerators. The difference is the depth readings when using a coil other than the stock 9.5. As I remember the depth (really a signal straight reading) is calibrated to the 9.5 coil for the US a penny. All my other coils vary on the depth. Rob

You're very fortunate Rob. I love my BigFoot, but it is 2 numbers higher than my stock coil as with some other bigger coils, but the small 5.3 is right on the money along with a few more coils. It depends on which coils you have. Yes, the depth is most likely always going to be different from one coil to another. Some not all that much difference in depth, but worth their weight in gold. JMHO. HH to all, Nancy

I only have the stock coil and the numbers are usually always off until I have the object in my hand and swing it directly over my coil. It is good about minus and positive VDI but other than that it is almost always off.

After reading Nancy's post regarding the BigFoot coil i thought i may as well post about another coil called a Goldfoot and it's similar to the Hotfoot but it's used on the 6.59 kHz detectors and i've had this coil about 2 years or so and it works great but every target reads a segment higher on an IDX Pro and about 7 numbers higher on the XLT VDI scale. This is a Magnum Force search head from Applied Creativity and most likely the same company who makes the BigFoot and here's my question with the response

>I have an old Goldfoot coil and used it on the XLT, Modified IDX Pro, 6000 Di Pro SL and it worked but the targets all read higher no matter how the GB was adjusted. IDX Pro reads foil as nickel and nickel as pulltab dime as quarter. I'm curious if you know which OLDER 6.59kHz detector this Magnum Force 2" x9" coil was designed for. Thanks for any help. HH Bill

ANSWER

It was used on all these lower frequency models
All target ID will be skewed when you use ANY loop other than the 950 Loop which it is calibrated for

I've only noticed the depth differential from most detectors using smaller coils but perhaps some coil designes can lead to improper Target ID also. Just thought i'd post his response just for the heck of it . HH Bill

I have not found any difference in VDI numbers using any of the factory coils. I have the 4X6, 6X9, 9.5 and the 12".
The only difference is depth, the numbers get weaker. A nickle can read as 14-16 at 5 inches using the 4X6 but still read as 18 with the 6X9 at 5 inches etc.
