Question about tones

Are the tones on the Sovereign and the Excalibur the same. I have heard that basically the Excalibur is a waterproof Sovereign is this true? I have had an Excalibur and an Explorer but never a Sovereign.

Yes, the Excaliber is basically a water-proof Sovereign. That is what I was told, and their sound characteristics (long drawn out beeooonngggs are about the same). However, there appears to be subtle differences, which I can't put my finger on. For example, I tried putting a WOT coil on my Excaliber (by buying one of those waterproof adapter connectors). I wasn't happy with the end result. I had to turn the sens. down to get any sort of stability, and it was just reeeallll fishy. But guys with the Sov. that put on the WOT for the beach, kick b*tt, and don't have the same fishy/stability prob. I dunno, maybe it was just my particular unit. I've heard others say there is some subtle differences between the Sov and Excal though too.

Thanks, I want to buy another Excalibur this summer and was thinking if the tones are the same the Sovereign would be a great machine to learn the tones on since you can pick them up so much cheaper than and Excal. I had an Excalibur but used it very little because I always used my Explorer on the land and never had time to water hunt. I have a job now that gives me a lot of time off so I am thinking I will learn to scuba and do some water hunting.

On the surface you have a Sovereign in a waterproof box but there's a few differences. Having the circuit board stretched on the Excaliber appeared to make it run a little bit smoother. Might be due to getting two componants that interfer with each other further apart.

On the other hand the Excaliber always runs behind the Sovereign in improvements and upgrades and as you don't have an easy coil change option if your not going into the water your always best to take the cheaper option of the Sovereign which has more adjustments, is cheaper to repair and allows the use of better, none Minelab headphones.

The tones are similar but you do pay the price of using waterproof headphones.
