Hi Marc.
The Xt30 is a fairly decent coin shooter.Depending on where in the world you are hunting. In the US, the tone system seems to work the best.I live in Australia and unless I'm hunting pre-decimal coins then I find the tones of no help.
To give a bench mark of comparison, I'll compare it to the Ace 250, as they are very similar in features.
Overall the Xt30 is a slightly better unit than the Ace250.The Xt30's strong points are:Better depth(the ace will only reach down to 6in with discrimination but a total of 8in with the standard coil.
:The Xt30 has a much better layout,ie.It is better balanced and thus more comfortable to swing.
:The discrimination on shallow targets seems to be more stable.I noticed that when I used an ace; it seemed to jump around a bit on surface targets.
The main pluses for the Ace250 over the Xt30 are
rice!
:The ace is better at pinpointing. This is something that it really excels at.
:And the other point of interest; which you may need to consult with other Canadian detectorists about; is how well each of these detectors perform at detecting Canadian coins. The reason I mention this, is due to comments made by John from Edmonton(He posts on the Garret forum regularly). He had owned a number of minelab units before (not including the X-terras) and found that they didn't detect Canadian coins very well but that the Garret machines perform this task very well.Mainly to do with the type of metal you coins are made of.On this point, if there are any other Canadian detectorists that swing the X-terra, please through your 2cents worth in.
Personally, Given the pluses I've mentioned about the Ace, If I were you I would tend to lean towards the Garret Machine.Just my opinion.
Hopefully some others, particularly anybody that has hunted in Canada, can also respond to you request and throw some more light on the subject for you.
Oh. One other point. The Ace has a better selection of coils.
Hope this doesn't sound like a sales pitch;it's just my own opinion.
Probably get fried as a traitor now.
Might even get you some further responses now.
All the best.
Mick Evans.
