Question about the X-70

Nampa 23

New member
It seems that in a much earlier post somewhere, I read that the X-70 regulates the voltage on the 4 AA's so they put out the optimum voltage up to the point they crash. Today while hunting, while the battery icon still showed half charged, the amount of signals dropped dramatically and I began to get false readings, such as an 8 on a quarter. I installed new batteries and the problems went away and I again got the correct numers and normal amount of signals for all the trash in the park. Is there something wrong with my detector and would rechargeble batteries help. If so, what is the general opinion about what is the best rechargeable battery system for the X-70. Thanks in advance for the help, nampa 23

I guess you could put rechargeables in your 70 but I have never
felt the need to do so.
A new set of alkaline should last long enough, I throw away
when I know they are winding down.
I forget how long they last but it is plenty long enough for me.
Now if we were talking Explorer, that would be a different story...

I figure my rechargables will last me a couple of years.

I suspect you may have had a weak cell. I would also make sure that you use a brand name battery. The other thing to keep in mind is that if you moved from low mineralization/low trash into higher mineralization/trash that this can have an effect on depth & number of finds.

Anytime the battery icon starts showing half charge, it is a good idea to change batteries as soon as the X-T 70 starts acting the least bit weird or if your going to be detecting away from the vehicle for an extended period of time. It is also wise to have a small VOM meter with a battery tester scale on it and take a voltage check before hand of every new battery you are going to be putting in your detector. Just two weeks ago I found a bad battery in among the new ones which were going to go into the X-T 70. Another good idea is to always carry a 4 pack of new batteries with you anytime your are out metal detecting, it can save making a trip back to either the vehicle or worse yet to the store.

I agree with BarnacleBill that is sounds as if you might have a weak cell. The easiest way to determine which one is to read each with a volt meter. Replace that culprit and see if you don't get better performance.

You are correct in that the X-TERRAs implement a regulated battery supply. As such, the X-TERRA is capable of hunting until the battery icon shows a drained battery. Having the icon indicate the batteries are drained doesn't mean that the batteries are completely down to zero volts. It just means the X-TERRA is no longer capable of being powered by that set of cells in their current condition.

As to using rechargeables...... I've tried a couple different brands of NiMH. Disregarding the ecological effects, I find it easier to slip in a new set of AA alkalines on my detectors without a special rechargeable pack such as on the Etrac. A few weeks ago, I found AA alkaline RayOVacs on sale at $10 for a 24 pack, buy one get one free. I figure if I can get 40 hours out of a set of four AA alkalines. That means for $20 worth of batteries, I can hunt for about 1000 hours with my X-TERRA.

Here is some info taken from the X-TERRA manual, regarding battery types and performance. HH Randy

I run my x-70 till batteries COMPLETELY die, and I never have bad performance, something is not right with your batteries or detector, one or the other

I have used some cheap brand alkalines and once they show
half battery, they fade really fast.
This might be what happened to you or like others mentioned,
one of your batteries was a weak cell.

Thanks all for the response. I'll wait to see if it happens again and if so I will test the voltage of each battery to see if maybe just one was bad. I wish I had thought of that before dumping the old ones. HH Nampa 23

I run till the machine dies too.

AA batteries over here work out around a $1 a battery! Needless to say that I use rechargeables. I'm still using the same rechargeables that I bought, when I bought my X-Terra 30 when they first came out. Use them in the Ace as well. Got around a 1000 hours on them now and only getting around 8 hours out of them now (I used to get around 15 hours). Still plenty though as I don't often use a detector for that long. If I could buy batteries as cheap as what you can, I'd use them.
There was a news story on the TV tonight in which a US business is building a large shop in Sydney (Costco). It's only the second of it's type to be built here. The other is in Melbourne. When I go down there, I'll be driving right past it. As we have only 2 supermarket chains that virtually control the market (70% of the market) this will help to start driving down prices on most things, including batteries.

Hi there Mick. Long time... If that Costco ends up anything like ours....great prices...usually. You do have to watch them though as sometimes I can find a cheaper price elsewhere. Their food is usually packaged in bulk sizes and offer a great deal for a family or even a single guy like me with two freezers. With only two competing markets I'm sure you will find them a refreshing change. Just thought I'd say hi, take care. Tortoise
