Question about the Cortes

bayoukid

New member
I've noticed a lot of Cortes machines going up for sale over the last few months and was wondering why so many just get one and they want to sell it?

I'm thinking about getting one but now I wonder???

Anybody here use one?

If you once owned one, did you like it?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

I still have mine. Bought it 4 years ago then bought a 1280-X so went water hunting. I just started using it on Easter again and am relearning it. It is a great machine. I have no plans to sell/trade mine as it does me very well. Have got 2 Mercs, 1 silver Rosie and about 8 wheats plus about $8.00 in clad the last week. and 5 pieces costume jewelry. HH.

I have a Cortes, happy with it and use it regularly, I don't know why some people are selling them other than just chasing greener pastures. At this point in the game (since 1950's-2009) detector technology has been pushed a long way, advancements are still to be made but mostly in smaller increments. I will venture to say that no current detector is that much "better" than the next, but the real difference is in the operator of the detector. Someone whom truly uses one and learns it can and will smoke anybody who is always trading for the latest and greatest. Whatever you buy, stick with it and learn it (it takes time).

I don't have the Cortes, but currently have a De Leon in my arsenal which is similar in many respects. I've been quite pleased with it, but it has preset ground balance in both the all metal mode and the disc whereas the Cortes has the GB in all metal and preset it Disc. plus it doesn't show as much info on the screen. I may trade up one of these days primarily because of the GB feature. Your statement about learning and knowing a machine is right on in my opinion.

Thanks for posting.

I ordered a new Cortes back about 4 years ago and the online dealer lost his dealership with Tesoro while my order was in the mail lol! He returned my money order and I ended ordering another brand.

As I recall a new Cortes was about $460 back then.

I never ordered another one but have been tempted many times. There's something about that model that just draws ya.

I only wish it had ground balance in discrimination mode. I now use the Tejon most of the time and without that GB it wouldn't be very deep at all. In fact, most people sell the Tejon because they don't really understand ground balancing.

I can get a max of 6 inches on a dime or 9+ inches. It all depends on the soil and ground balancing. But really, all brand and models have to be learned. Probably 95% of the bad feedback on a top brand is due to not understanding it.

Just my thoughts.

I do believe you hit the nail on the head when you wrote "chasing greener pastures."

Been guilty of that myself more than once. lol

Good post.

There's a lot to say for being satisfied. Few people are today it seems.

Bayoukid, I agree, the Cortes would be a bit more appealing if it also had manual gb in discrimination. However, the DeLeon gives the same id on the screen in all metal or discrimination and I'm sure that holds true for the cortes. For the times that ground may be a problem, hunting in all metal may not be so bad with the display showing the target. I check my Deleon fairly often in different locations in all metal and sometimes it's a bit positive and other times a bit negative, but I've been getting good depth most everywhere I've hunted. Granted, one of these days I'll probably hit a spot with high mineralization, but I take my Eldorado along for back up and the Manual GB on it is functional in both modes, so I'm pretty well covered.

Knowing your machine as you mention is worth a bunch. I started out with a Silver Sabre umax that I still use and I've gotten to where I'm pretty accurate on coin id from just thumbing the disc. and listening closely. It's a preset too, but most of the parks, tot lots, and the fair grounds here have pretty reasonable soil and truthfully, I haven't been handicapped much at all with the preset.

I have had my Cortes maybe a year now. Have no plans yet on letting it go although I don't use it much. Although I'm trying to cut down down to about a half dozen or less detectors.Just getting to the point that I don't need a dozen or more.

Tab - you must be like me - finding it difficult to hunt with more than one at any given time.LOL
