Question about the 4" Tesoro Sniper coil

I was researching smaller coils and saw had stated that when buying a different coil, you might need to send the detector in to Tesoro to have it matched with the coil.Seems like if I did that, the 8" factory could would then might be "unmatched".

So if I bought the 4" Sniper coil 4RC-SW-E that's listed for the uMax, does it have to be tuned or is that just for non-Tesoro coils? Thanks.

Units with manual GB have no problem.
Your Silver with the correct coil designed for it shouldn't either.
Most have no problem switching coils that are designed for that unit by Tesoro, even without manual GB.
There could be a little tweaking possible to make everything optimum to the Nth degree, but unless you see real problems with depth or disc readings way out of normal I wouldn't spend the time or money to do it.
I don't think they would even do any balancing on any of their products with other manufacturers coils, but I could be wrong about that.

In all the years that i have used various coils on both of my Tesoro machines i have never needed to get them modified, just change them over and away you go,i use the small 4'' coil on usually trashy roman sites and detecting in water courses for votive offering, the small coil is superb in high trash areas.

Years ago I called and asked about the need to send in and match coils. The answer at that time was it is a good idea if you are going to use the different coil most of the time in order to set MAXIMUM efficiency or if, after trying, the performance seems to be way off from what you'd expect. I've switched different coils, including the 4", often with no problem. In my cases, the performance has always been acceptable and I wouldn't consider sending everything in until trying. My two bits.

got pretty much every size coil made for Tesoro and use each one at the different sites I hunt , never had any issues with performance of each different coil . I even have the NEL coils for the Tesoros and they work very well on mine . I would think if each coil had to be set for a certain machine Tesoro would state that on their website. JMHO

It was my understanding that with manual ground balance machines you did not need to do that.

With fixed ground balance machines, so long as your second coil is smaller than the stock coil, you did not need to send it in. If you second coil was larger than the stock coil, it should be sent in.

I use a 5.75 coil on my Eldorado and Silver Umax. The Eldorado has manual ground balance, but when I have used it with the Silver I have not noticed any loss of performance other than what I would expect with the smaller coil. No doubt there is some loss of performance due to it not being "tuned", but I would guess it is negligible and most would not notice much of a loss of depth. The small coils is not so much about depth as it is working in a trashy area anyways. I find even with the small coil I am often running my sensitivity much lower to handle the iron, nails and trash.

What is the expected loss in performance associated with smaller coils? Thanks.

I do not think there is an actual sliding scale for loss as there are so many variables. With my 8" and 5.57" coils in air tests I see about 1/2 to 1 inch loss in detection depth/range with all settings the same. In actual use I have noticed very little difference, and seem to dig targets about the same depth with both coils. Most areas I hunt rarely get anything below 6 to 7 inches, as the items end up on rock base or hard pan. My opinion is I likely loose about 1/2" between the coils. The 4" may see a bit more loss but much greater target separation. In trash I worry more about nulling than depth, as I am unlikely to get very good depth due to the iron trash and masking that takes place.

in normal ground like black soil probably only a little loss with out GB but more minerals more loss without GB, and having said that I have a 4" on the way to see how it does on the Outlaw, I have easy ground so I tune the Tesoros to my big silver .999 thumb ring its huge and found it a good way to tune the Tesoro machines for easy ground, because if I don't get it spot on I lose big silver and so tuned to the ring I get big silver and everything else under it

My Silver Umax performed fine with the smaller coils but when i used a 10x12 WS coil it was very obvious that something was off....Targets such as coins sounded "rough" on this coil. I called Tesoro and was told that it would need to be tuned to the 10x12 if i wanted to use that coil. So, i feel it is more of an issue if you are going with a larger than stock coil on a fixed GB machine.
