Question about the 3kHz coil.

Mick in Dubbo

New member
I'm seriously thinking of trading in the XT30 on Tuesday (got to take my son for some tests in Sydney and will be in the next suburb to the detecting shop).
If I were to buy the low frequency coil, how would it go at hearing smaller coins? The reason I ask, is that with the X-Terra 30, our $2 coins give a weaker signal (due to their smaller size) and as a result you can walk over them if you don't check out the weaker signals. Would this be aggravated much by using this coil?
Thanks.
Mick Evans.

If your small coins are copper or silver I would think the 3 kHz would hit them a little better. Plus the 3kHz would go a little deeper too.

I would say it would hit that coin better. Much better than if it had been in the nickel range. I'm sure the dealer would let you try it out on your coins before you buy?

Your two dollar coin is an interesting alloy (92% copper, 6% aluminium, 2% nickel) Does the surface oxidize quickly and turn off colour?

A quick off the cuff thought is that the stock 7.5 Khz might be best. Khouse's suggestion to check/compare at a dealers is a good idea.

Thanks for the input boys.
Yes, it does have a high copper content and will hit as a 30 on the XT 70, but I am concerned about it's behavior on it. Apart from that, I can see some benefit in having one.
I'm hoping to get out of the trip if I can and see if the doctors up here can do the tests required; otherwise it's going to be 10 to 11 hours of driving and up to 6 hours hanging around the hospital.( It will be a very long day.) Getting to the shop would be a very neat bonus though.:detecting::thumbup:
