Question about Tesoro Vaquero coil

JEF

troll
I purchased an 8" donut coil for my Tesoro Vaquero. It only comes with an 8 foot cord. Is is possible to send the coil in to Tesoro and have it shortened to 3 feet?

you can cut it yourself theres a small hole in the silver plug where you can pop the outside silver bit off pretty sure the holes are numbered so you will know which wire goes where take a photo too..

this is all from memory and I may have missed a step but it is pretty easy soldering iron some solder and wire cutters trimmers and away you go

and they may or may not do it but its going to cost at least 50 $

Tesoro will do it but not sure about the process. Doesn't seem like it would be hard if you can get the connector apart. I'd think that the bare wires are held in with screws for each wire like the industrial connectors I use at work.

I'd rather not attempt it myself. I would probably just screw it up. I think I will call Rusty at Tesoro Monday and check into it. Thanks for your answers. I get a lot of good information from this forum.

I have a big DD with that long cord and never had a second's worry about it.
I run it up from the bottom and when I get near the top I just wrap it around the shaft a few more times than I do with the short ones.
That keeps it neat and out of the way, I can't discern any difference at all in weight and I would never consider spending any money on shipping or anything else to fix something that I don't consider any problem or issue at all.
For me, anyway.

I do something similar. I coil it up the pole like normal then just loop it up like an extension cord at the top and twist tie the loop. That way any time I change coils I leave the loop there so next time I just wrap it like a short cable and leave the loop.

I have been doing the same thing with the long cord. It's not really that much of a problem. It just takes longer to switch coils because I have to unwind 8 feet of coil instead of 3. It is faster to change coils with the 3 foot cords. I wonder why Tesoro doesn't sell the donut coil with option of either a 3 or 8 foot cord.

Stoof-tabsallday,

That looks like a good idea. Maybe I will try that. Like I said before, I get a lot of really good ideas from this forum. Thank you.

No problem. The idea is to leave around the same amount not looped as a normal coil. You only have to loop it once, then just always leave it looped like that then next time you put the coil on you do just like a short cable but leave the loop at the top.
Works for me

It's a white-colored coil I acquired last week. I want to mount it on my Bandido II microMAX, but the eight foot cable is unwanted. It did give me one more detector to sell with a brown colored, short-length cable coil that I already had on-hand. I tried the loop-and-Velcro method 'Stoof' had a picture of years ago, but it's an annoyance. Back then I had better eyes, no numbness in my hands that are also plagued by arthritic mobility, and I shortened them myself. Can't do them comfortably so I sold my soldering iron years ago. Quite easy to do, just making sure you reattach the proper colored wires to the proper pin post.

The last three long-cable Tesoro coils I had I had others do the work. One I took to a community college and asked the electronics instructor if anyone wanted to do it as a class project. Instead he said he'd do it for me, no charge, and I picked it up the next morning. Another I carried into a local repair shop, which are in far fewer number than we used to have for TV, Radio and Appliance repair. That fellow shortened it for me for $20. The last one I asked Tesoro to do when I sent in my original Bandido to get a broken battery clip replaced in 2015 before our open group detecting trip to some Nevada ghost towns.

I checked the 8' cabled white coil and other two brown 8" coils on my personal-use 'original' Bandido, Bandido II microMAX and Mojave as well as the extra Bandido and Bandido II µMAX just to make sure all of the coils were working properly. No sense in paying to have a bad coil's cable shortened. I'm headed into the nearest town of modest size today and check for anyone to do the repair locally. If unsuccessful, then it's off-to-Tesoro for the cable fix.

You might want to check around for a local repair source before sending it off to Tesoro. I want to so I'll have less down-time (even though I have plenty of detectors to get me by in the meantime). There is a local Ham Radio Club and I would guess that some member might be into doing this sort of simple job for me.

I am not sure why they only list the 8' cabled 8" coil for that series. When I bought a brown 8" coil new for my Lobo SuperTRAQ back in '99 I had the long-cable / short-cable option from the dealer and it came with the shorter cable.
