Question About Tesoro Four Pin Coils

MarkCZ

Well-known member
Okay, getting to the question,
I know that Tesoro makes four pin and five pin coils, or to say coils that have four pin connectors and coils that have five pins.
But, what I didn't know was that they also made some that are four pin but instead of the connector being made to receive male pins these are reversed and are made to mate with the female pins on the control housing (these have four male pins instead of the four female pins)

Questions,
What models was the four male pinned coils used on?
Can the four male pinned coil be rewired to work on a Tejon?

Thanks
Mark

I think it has more to do with the khz the coil is designed for. I recently shortened the cord on a 5 pin coil but it only uses 4 wires. One pin is not used.

Well, I know that on Tesoro's website all their current models falls into to two groups,
The Delta group, and the
Epsilon Group,

The Tejon falls into the "Delta Group" which includes the,
Tejon,
Vaquero,
Cibola, and
Lobo Super Trac.

In the Epsilon group you have,
Golden,
Outlaw,
Silver Umax,
Cortes,
DeLe

The 4 pin reversed coil connectors were used on the first Lobo (not the later ones) and one of the Gold Demons I believe. They are NOT usable on any of the later machines as they are designed for a much higher frequency.
I ran into this problem thinking I was purchasing a coil that would work on my Vaquero, WRONG. Fortunately I was able to sell it to a person that had a compatible machine.

Well, in doing more research I've found two older model Lobo's for sell, both sellers state their machines running@ 17.5khz
So, if that's the case then the frequency of both the older Lobo's and the current Lobo's are the same.

I did notice that the older model didn't have the "Black Sand Mode" and some other differences in controls and modes.

The original Lobo is described in the owners manual (available online at Tesoro) as having an operating frequency of "approximately 20kHz". If you're thinking that 17.5 kHz is "approximately 20kHz" I think you will find that Tesoro will tell you, just like they told me - that they are different.

I would recommend the newer LST, the included 10' elliptical is a really nice coil, add a 8" or 9x8 concentric and you have a very versatile setup.

Here is the deal!
I saw this PERFECT size coil on ebay its a Tesoro coil, its 3.5"x 7" the seller told me they thought it fit the Delta series detectors. But the picture of the connector isn't right.
So, researching that I'm collecting information.
I looked on the Tesoro web site for the actual OLD model Lobo manual but couldn't find it, I did find a review of the OLD Lobo that referred to the "approximately 20khz" ??? but that wasn't to specific, but to me read more rounded off or estimated. All the specs I've every read gave the specs, not near, or close, or rounded up or down, so what does "Approximately 20khz" mean ?
19.8?
21.3?
18.8?
They don't get vague in specifications, they just don't put it in there, not almost.
I have a owners manual for one of my other detectors that states for the frequency "Operating Frequency. ....................................................Proprietary" (copy and paste)

And even if it is 20khz, its no farther out of range than the 14khz of the other models in the delta group? I mean the Tejon is 17.2khz, the Vaquero is 14khz, but the coils are compatible between them.

I also have wrote Tesoro an email about the coil, but I figured it was a Holiday week so It's going to be sometime in the future before I get a reply back.
At this point I have pretty much wrote the coil off as NOT working on my Tejon, but I'm more convinced (not fact yet) that its not a frequency difference but something else about the circuitry of the detectors in general. I'm sure Tesoro isn't going to tell me the specifics, just that its not compatible.

Two different owners of the old Lobo's state them to be running @ 17.5khz So, I'll keep looking, collecting information until its runs me down a dead end road, then I'll move on.

Well, I'm not looking at getting another detector just a smaller coil for my Tejon (smaller than the two 5.75"'s I have) The coils for the LST are compatible with the Tejon, or to say both of these detectors are in the same Delta group. So, I could run that LST 10" elliptical on my Tejon, but it doesn't have any smaller footprint than what I have now.

What I'm looking for isn't out there, I want a 3.75" sniper coil for hunting smaller areas with high trash.
I have a Fisher 1266 and a 1270 and I have a 3.75" coil for them and its great! it would be nice to have one for my Tejon and being I don't I'm forced back to my 20 year old stand by.

Gotcha, I see they do not make the hockey puck for the Delta series. If you are the DIY type, Jim shows you how to roll your own micro mini figure 8 coil:

That's exactly the deal I got into - looking for a smaller coil for the Vaq. When it came, I called Rusty and learned it was designed for 20Khz and just a couple of the earliest gold machines and would not work even if the connections were rewired. I was fortunate to be able to sell it to someone that could use it.
