Question about technique/settings... Input please!

Okay, I have recently discovered the value of hunting in 99 tones mode with very little discrimination (only notching out -4 and -2). What is everyones feeling about this? I know "to each his own" applies and it is a matter of preference, but I totally now understand what everyone was talking about when it comes to "whispers" when using this technique.

Also, in this mode with the Low Frequency coil... I've noticed I am digging a TON more junk. Yea, I'm rescanning the hole and making sure I've retrieved the "good" signal target. I don't mind digging the trash, because I also seem to be digging more good targets as well (those I was missing using the coin-shooting setting with more discrimination).

Finally, I think I've read (and I have to be honest I haven't gone back to look into my own manual), about Iron Masking in Prospecting Mode. Does anyone coin-shoot in Prospecting Mode using the Iron Masking? Good? Bad? Indifferent?

Thanks to those who take the time to read this. I am ground balancing (and do so about every 1/2 hour or so and on obvious turf changes), and have my sensitivity set anywhere from 24 up to 26.

Happy Hunting! I think I'm gonna go find some goodies in a just few!

When I hunt in all metal, multiple tones and with the low frequency coil, I dig very little trash. At least not the old deep iron. My approach is to X over the target until I can determine exactly where it is located. I use a blade of grass or a pebble to make a mental note of where it is buried. I then check the target location in Prospecting mode. If it isn't in the same exact position in both modes, I'd bet it is iron. If it does seem to be in the same exact location, I sweep the coil over the target very slowly, while dragging it toward my feet. As the target nears the outside perimeter of the coil, I listen for a change of tone in the audio. If the target continues to make the same sound that it did while directly over it, I dig. If the target tone changes to a blending of tones (harmonics) as the target nears the outside perimeter of the coil, I usually don't dig as it will be iron or another highly ferrous target. I'm not telling you to not dig anything. I'm just telling you how I determine what deeply buried iron sounds like on the X-70 and 705. One other thing I would offer...... slow down your sweep speed. Sweeping the coil too quickly over a target can result in an inaccurate TID. JMHO HH Randy

Great advice all around. I will try the Prospecting mode after finding the target and see how that works.

I have noticed that the low freq coil seems to prefer a slower sweep speed, which is fine.

I am also noticing that penny's seem to be bouncing all over from 34 all the way up to 42 then back down (with the low freq coil). Well, on penny's that are at least 3 to 4 inches deep or deeper. This wasn't happening with the stock coil.

I appreciate the advice! Thanks for responding!

I noticed the same thing on pennies, I get them as high as 44 at times, the other day I could swear I had a quarter was 42 locked on, dug down 5" to get a copper memorial! I agree about sweeping slow, I have slowed my swing down considerably, and feel it really helps out

do you guys recommend that i use the 3hz coil in 9inch? or dd in 7.5hz to find silver coins down deep.thanks
there is quite a few posts discussing this topic. But it has a lot to do with the ground conditions in the areas you hunt, for me the 9" 3khz works better for me, for others the DD coil works better
