Question about smaller than stock coil

cloctor

New member
Looking for any input about the Sunray 8 inch coil, the Joey, or Platypus coil , or the Minelab 8 inch coil. I need something that will let me hunt some trashy areas. I have heard that the Platypus is better in trash and deeper than the stock coil. Thanks for any help.

I personally own and use a Joey Coil and I wouldn't trade it for the world. I have found scores of silver and other coins with it in really trashy sites. I think this coil is one of the best for this type of hunting. I've seen it pick up a dime at about 10" before. I had my stock coil when I found the coin but a buddy of mine was using a Joey Coil that day and I had him come over and see if he could get it and he thought that I had put a new coin on top of the ground since it was such a loud signal. I told him to look at his depth meter and he almost crapped his pants. I was amazed that the Joey could actually pick it up. It must have had a heck of a halo built up around it. That is one reason I love this coil. It is easy to get between the trash and pinpointing, the item will be directly under the decal on the top of the coil in the front. Awesome coil! Now for the 8" Minelab. That is also a good coil and I have dug about a good 8" or so for Tokens before with it, so it does have the depth. And it can seperate trash from good targets too. I own this coil but I prefer to use the Joey. I haven't used a Platypus Coil yet but I would think that it would be too big to be able to see thru trash very well and I know that if it was too trashy it would get masked from the coins due to all the junk in the ground so I wouldn't recommend this coil for this purpose. The Sunray 8" works just as well if not a bit better than the Minelab 8" and it might have a little more depth to it. I hope this info helps you and Good Luck and HH.
