question about older vaquero

just got an older V, and i noticed that the stock coil and lower rod has smaller attachment holes than my new cibola. even the screw is different, dosent have the wing on both sides, making it harder to tighten. it came also with a 5.75 coil that does have the right size holes as the C. whats up with that ? im gonna have to drill the holes bigger and get a new screw to make it compatible for other coils. i know its the right lower rod, because a fellow on another forum had two for sale with the same weird screws.anyone else wonder why they did that ? guess i could get a new lower rod and just drill the holes bigger on the stock coil.the small coil works fine on this set up, but you cant even tighten the stock coil enough to keep it in place. thanks for any ideals and input.

All (to my understanding) the earlier Tesoros used a stainless steel bolt with slotted head and an insulated nut. You can find the same size bolts and wing nuts made of nylon at well equipped hardware outlets. I've used the smaller ones on the older poles and the newer larger ones on the more recent poles and haven't had any problem with either, but I don't bang my coils around when in use so the strength factor hasn't been an issue for me. I've seen a few posts arguing whether or not the metal screw affects detecting, but I haven't been able to see any discernible difference. If you want total compatibility, you can drill them out as you mention. I haven't bothered to do so as I have a fair selection of poles with both sized holes.

They changed to the larger hole on the lower stem a few years back . I believe all 5.75 coils have the 1/4 hole

Duke is correct, just drill everything out to 1/4", rods and coil ears and get some new 1/4" nylon bolts and wingnuts from a hardware store, lowes or home depot. your done:thumbup:

I had an older G umax with the stainless coil screw, drilled and changed it so it would be common to my spares I carry. I always wondered why the coil didn't pick up the metal screw . Anyone got an answer for that?

The steel bolt moves along with the coil.
