Question about NOTCHING VS DISCRIMINATION....help!!!

I have an ACE 250 and a Tesoro Vaquero. On the Vaquero, I find a target and can turn the disc knob until the target no longer makes a sound and that can give an indication of what it is......however......the more discrimination you use (by turning the disc knob more and more to the right), the less depth you get. Not a problem on shallow targets but on deep ones what you think you're disc'ing out may actually a loss of a target due to loss of depth. Hmmmmmmm!

On the ACE, if you don't want to HEAR the iron you just "notch" out the first segment or two on the left side of the screen. While waving the detector on the ground the iron (target i.d. cursor) will produce a black block below iron, it just won't make the "bong" sound.

If you "notch" out blocks 1 to 8 (starting from the left side of the screen), that leaves blocks 9 - 12 and you'll get mostly coins with silver, copper pennies, and silver jewelry (or what I call cherry picking) without most of the trash. Of course, while you're doing this, the target I.D. cursor is putting those black blocks below all the targets it's picking up....it's just not making the "bong" sound.

Here's my question.....does this mean that when the ACE is set up to "notch out" certain target areas (like those in blocks 1 to 8 listed above) that you're not actually losing ANY depth (like you do by turning the disc knob to the right on the Tesoro) because the blocks still "light up" over the targets, you're just not hearing the sound that accompanies a found target? If that's true, then you could "notch" out everything and not lose an inch of depth....the blocks would still be lit up when a target is found....you just wouldn't hear the noise. So....if you're a deaf person, you could still metal detect by just seeing the screen....and save batteries by having the sound turned off! Am I on track or lost in space? I'm retired and don't hunt at night and too much idle time to think on things. Thanks in advance for your help! dan in so cal

That's true-but WAY TOO MUCH to think about.

It is my understanding that you don't lose any depth, just the iron tone.

That's exactly right. With the Ace machines, you don't lose any depth with
notching. They are always in all metal mode, and the notches just turn off
the audio for that notch. So yes, a deaf person could use one. And the visual
display can be handy for seeing objects that are notched.
A deaf person would not need to make any adjustments.. Visually, it's always
showing everything no matter what notches are on. So it could be on "coins",
"relics", or whatever.. Wouldn't matter to them. Visually it will still show the
same, except for the notch indicators.

Notching only removes the tones but not depth as previously mentioned....much more effective for selective discrimination then knobs.
