Question about my x-50...

Took the 50 out yesterday to try to get a better feel for what the numbers and sounds are telling me. The area that I was hunting is a wide open field that has a few wheat pennies sprinkled about. It is the site of an old school building, and does have a little iron scattered about too. The detector was properly GBed too.
So, here is what I found...I got a broken hit that was reading 39,42 and 45. It was a little more solid than most of the iron hits, but it was definately choppy. So, I switched from disc,in which I had masked the iron segments, to all metal. When I switched, I would get -9 and -6 that would fill in those choppy sounds. So I was getting -9, 42,-6,39,-9,45 and so on. Whenever I got a positive number, the depth would be around 6", but whenever the negative number come up, the depth of target would increase to >10". Despite the numbers that were showing and the choppyness of the signal(which I assumed was iron), I dug the target. It was really hard dirt(this time of year)and when I got down about 6", lo and behold I find a dime. Not really old mind you('73). So I got wondering if the iron signal was still there. I scanned the hole, and nothing. I filled the hole and nothing. I know that on my Tesoros that I had used, that had tones or display, it wasnt unusual for the target to identify a little lower if you were on the fringes of detectability. But this seems a little extreme...bouncing between an iron/foil reading and a semi-silver target!
Has anyone else seen this, and what could be causing it(please dont tell me that it is ferrite induced either:))? Any help and/or suggestions would be appreciated.

If that ground was as DRY and hard as you say it was then I'm leaning towards the sensitivity being to high on your detector.
Next time out under the same conditions, leave your 50 settings like they were before and when you find your next target in the 6" range that wants to jump all over the place just simply start running the sens down a notch at a time and see if the display settles down before you completely lose the target on audio.
WOW that was a LOOOOOONG sentence huh :)
Anyway, give that a whirl and let us know the results.
I've been seeing the same thing here (no rain in forever)and just turning down the sens has pretty much cured it. Of course I'll have to go back over these areas again when some moisture accumulates and I can turn the power back up to see what's left in the ground.

I'll give it a try. I had been running the Sens.@ 15. I try dropping it in the 12-13 range. Thanks for the advice!

Just my thought, Maybe there was a "small" piece of foil in the ground and when you dug the target the foil got moved around and wasent detectable , its happened to me before on the beach, I got a foil signal dug it up and lost the signal only after sifting the sand "hopeing for a small piece of gold" i found a "small" piece of foil. good luck HH

for the suggestion. I have seen foil completely fool this detector too. A very small scrap of foil was right on the surface, under the grass canopy, and it read as a dime.
