Question about my Vaquero

deathhare

New member
So took the Vaq out on its maiden hunt today. The machine is new to me but not new. It seems real easy to deal with the new controls over the Silver uMax and ground balancing hasnt been a challenge really.
Actually a little trouble and I hope nothing is wrong with the machine.
So sometimes when I try to ground balance the tone goes completely away if it move towards the ground and I cant balance it no matter what. If I wait a bit or just carry on hunting and try again, itll usually work. As well, with the same effect, sometimes the pinpoint doesnt seem to work right. Like the threshold sound just goes away if you move the detector at all. Like its going off or something.

Does this make sense to any Vaquero users and is it normal?
I would say it happened about 25% of the time I tried to ground balance or pinpoint, or run in all metal.

Thanks for your help.

Sounds like you might be way too positive and nulling out on just about anything.
Make sure you have CLEAN ground to balance in or it won't work right.
Even with a 10 turn control as on my modded Cibola, just a touch makes all the difference.
Use an aluminum can at close range, in all metal to learn the null sound.
Hope that helps?

I have the Vaquero and its been doin that to me too, but i think it was because i was in a trashy area. The knob can be turned only a little and still make a huge difference, thats what i found. If the sounds goin away you want to turn the Ground balance towards the positive, but do it at slight intervals

Glad it sounds like it could be normal.
If it wasnt raining today and the next, Id be out there again working with it.
Hate rainy weekend days. :(

im sure it just depends on ground type and such...its prolly easier in some places than others. Good luck

When I do the first ground balance after getting to where ever I will be hunting, I turn the threshold up a bit so it is nicely audible. This helps with giving more obvious neg/pos balance sounds. When I am hunting, I have the thresh at a barely audible, I can press the red button and listen for either too pos or too neg balance.
I agree with POLEWAGGER.
