Question about my MX5

JEF

troll
Something weird has been happening with my MX5. When I am using it, all of a sudden the threshold tone will go really high, and when I go over a target, the beep tone is a lot higher than normal also, but very weak in volume. I am using 2 tone mode. If I turn it off, and then back on, it goes back to the normal threshold, and target beep. It has happened the last few times that I used it. The last time it did it twice in the same day. This is my second MX5, and the first one never did this. Has anyone else had this happen with their MX5? It is still under warranty until May, 2017.

I only live about 25 miles from the Whites headquarters in Sweet Home, OR, so I'll probably take it over there and have them check it out, since it is still under warranty.

I had two MX5's and both did exactly what you described. I never sent either one back as there was no performance issues with this weird trait. If there is warranty left on your detector and you live in a cold state, I would send it in to be looked at when the season ends. Personally, I would not worry about it.

Hmmm... I' m stuck on 8 tone mode and have only used 2 tone once- so that means I'll have to try again. Otherwise, no problems.

It's my favorite tone!!!! I call it the schitzoid mosquito sound. Comes in loud and clear on my $6 Koss headphones.! Perhaps you hear lower sounds better?

8 tones audio should be a favorite for coin hunters as the high tone stands out. I relic hunt with mine and 8 tones is too much information and the lower tones gets garbled up into nonsensical audio. Coin mode with 2 tone audio with everything notched in is just the ticket for my kind of hunting around old structures like turn of the century homes, churches, picnic grove and other old use sites. The low tones let you know how much ferrous crap is in the ground and the high tones indicate non ferrous targets. The MX5 is capable of sorting out the non ferrous in machine gun ferrous low tones.....great machine in my book.

Hombre, have you ever had this happen on your MX5? Is this just a quirk of the MX5, or should I have it checked out? It doesn't seem to affect the performance, once I reset it by turning it off and back on. I never had this happen with the MX5 that I sold.

The reason that I am using 2 tone, is because it seems kind of like my Tesoro Bandido II umax, except that the Bandido only has the one tone instead of 2.

Thanks for any advice that you can give me.

Well JEF...If it was my MX5, I would send it in, going by your signature it seems that you have a backup detector or two...lol

I bought mine in August 2014 from Monte V. Berry and it was a newer production model made in April 2014 so it does not have the tone glitch.

White's shouldn't take too long to fix it because if I recall correctly all they do is remove one resistor.

Well, I took it over to Sweet Home yesterday, and left it with Mary Hudson. She said that she will have them check it out for me. It is still under warranty until May, 2017. That's the nice thing about living only 25 miles from the Whites headquarters. I don't have to ship it to them, I can just drive over there and drop it off.

Now I'm interested in the 2 tone setting. Will have to try it out whenever it quits flooding here in East Texas.

My MX5 is now fixed. I went over today and picked it up. It must have been one of the early ones that had the audio problem. They removed an audio resistor. Also, they said that the 5.3 coil that I had on it was out of spec, and replaced it at no charge. I took it out this afternoon after I picked it up. It works fine and without the weird audio glitch that it had before.

good news for you

me about a 200$ exercise one of the joys of living in the middle of bloody nowhere :nopity:

makes me laugh this stuff really why not just let me know which resistor so I can cut the cancer out??

anyway keep us updated in time to see if the fix sticks?

resistor

Take a look at the link provided, it might give you a clue which resistor to remove. Look for the post Carl-NC made.

Not responsible if it bricks the MX5....

Thanks cadman_us interesting what Carl said about the MX5 and sort of fits what I was saying (without knowing its history) it was a knock up detector a mutant if you will maybe that's why I like it despite its mutagenicity maybe removing that resistor will take that special thing it has away and I was just thinking that after I found out the problem/fix.

but will check inside have a look see what's going on with R67  sort of sounds like an episode of the x-files.

so yes thanks very much for the info much appreciated !!
