Question about My Explorer SE

Hi, I just bought a new never used Explorer SE with the 10 in round coil and I have only used it once and I absolutely love it. my question is this, I noticed the ferous and conductivity numbers like to jump around quite a bit, I was hunting in junky ground not super bad but nails and such scattered about(house was built in 1905 and has had several additions built onto it over the years) is there a setting to make the numbers more steady? I noticed when I would move the coil very slowly I would hear the flutey tone and then a low tone so I would go at the target from another angle and I would get the same response. then when I would pinpoint sometimes the numbers would lock onto the nail or whatever junk metal was in the ground next to the good target and read 31-31 but if I was real careful with my positioning I could get a pinpoint lock and get a good set of numbers like 07-25 (indian head penny) and sure enough there was an indian head penny in the hole and either on the side of the target hole or a little below the target would be a rusty nail, etc. I hope I am explaining this clear enough so you guys can help me. thanks and I look forward to hearing some suggestions.

Sounded good to me. Thats why i dont use the digital screen. The Smartscreen gives a lot more information and is a lot easier on the eyes. Deep targets are going to jump on any detectors TID. Sorry but there isnt an easy answer to your and our problem except to trust your sound, recheck your targets from all directions, pinpoint, size, you know.... al those things to get ya to dig that target.

Sounds like you now figured out two main ingredients - go slowly, and listen to the tone(s). The numbers are going to bounce (and the cursor flutter, as they say). Nature of the beast, if the search area is signal rich.

There are lots of older posts on here that describe searching in trash, iron, nails, etc. that are available via the forum 'search' function and that are helpful to review.

Dirtflipper....

I just had to comment on the term you used ..... " Signal rich" .... man I love that term .:clapping:... It sounds like a designer word meaning "a whole bunch of junk". :super:
I'll feel better now knowing I'm detecting signal rich areas......

Dewcon is right.....smartscreen also it alittle more stable than digital. You could also try turning down your sens....that might help in more ways than one.....by all means get andys book on this....its a must.
